Putting aerial maps on....anything?
While we were out the other day exploring new areas I got to thinking how great it would be to have an aerial view of where we were. Cell service was poor so my Android couldn't update google maps and I was wondering if there was a way to download aerial views on my sd card. Even better would be to hook my Garmin up to my Kindle Fire along with aerial maps, but I think that is wishful thinking. Any ideas?

Many of the newer Garmin Handheld GPS receivers support the Garmin BirdsEye Satellite Imagery loaded via BaseCamp.

To answer my own questions for posterity, Backcountry Navigator does exactly what I wanted. I can download USGS aerials for free and store them on my SD card when their is no service, and you can select the level of detail you want to download....nice. It will then do most basic GPS stuff like track your route, show speed and elevation graphs, etc. Free to try, $10 to buy, money well spent!

Been using motion x for the past few weeks on the iPhone, able to download aerial bing photography for offline use, import tracks, make tracks, etc. Cost one dollar!
