Running it will be fine.
When I'm working in Washington state for 5 months and it sits, the parts in the carb corrode.

I'm undecided on an engine swap right now, 1.6L is easy.
1.9L VW is mo betta

where to buy quality petol for your machine.

Most marinas sell ethanol free gas, ethanol will reek havoc on a boat due to the moisture drawing effect it has. there are a few websites devoted to locating and posting marinias with ethanol free gas.

I shoulda listened....

My 2012 Patrol has 5,000km on it. I've had fatal clutch friction plate failure (a 12 mile tow out of the Jefferson Nat forest) and 30 days in the shop. Just got it back, did about 300 miles and MAJOR rapping noise down deep in the engine. Both valve covers had a spoonful of metal shavings. That cost me $200 to rent a car to drive home...Now the dealer is pulling the engine and shipping it to HQ.... Going into the 3rd week of this repair... Fuck me running.... I've got $16K sunk into this POS....

There is ANOTHER 2012 with bad pushrods getting an engine overhaul and a '10 who's engine seized on July 5. THREE "new" Urals that shit their engines in Virginia THIS MONTH!

(Just as a FYYFF, I've restored a '49 IZH, a '52 M72 and had a '97 650 Ural... This ain't my first rodeo...)

NO other motorcycle, except MAYBE Hysong has this kind of quality...

Yeah, tis the season, 3 weeks wait to get into ANY dealer (if you can find one that WILL do Ural warranty work!). If you MUST buy a Ural, plan on a WIDE trailer and find a dealer that will do the warranty work (ask beforehand).

I AMOST swapped out the clutch myself, but I'll be damned if I'm wrenching on a $16k bike with 3K miles on it!

I should have bought a R1200GS with the money...
"But then you wouldn't have a sidecar!"
Well...I don't have a sidecar OR the $16k now!

Of course you are upset and angry.

However, if you take a passing look at any BMW R1200GS forum, you'll find a swathe of owners whining about how their bikes are stuck in the dealers having final drive / clutch / gearbox / engine / electronics issues.

Or indeed just about any one make forum for any bike.

Bikes break down, even new ones. They are mechanical devices.

Get used to it. :)

Pissed

"Get use to it"
Lets see, I've owned over 150 cars, over 30 motorcycles, 4 aircraft, countless boats, antique tractors....I MIGHT know a little something about wrenching on running creatures... And IF you MUST buy a Ural EXPECT that the build quality is sub- Hysong level at BMW prices. All the rest about "Ural improving their quality" is f*cking hype. They STILL suck. Now sucking at $3,500 (like my 97) wasn't bad. Yes, BMW has FD failures, they sell more GS's in a week than Ural sells in a YEAR. I PERSONALLY know 3 Urals in MY STATE that have seized engines RIGHT NOW! How man people do you PERSONALLY know that had a FD failure this month? Yeah, go ahead, buy a Ural, better yet, buy MY Ural (when I f*cking get it back!)

I'll give ya $3500 for it

I badly want one, but as you said, a broken cheap bike isn't nearly as frustrating as a broken $16k bike.

Hope they get it sorted out soon.

CASH money? Hmmmmm...... Oh, buyer beware... MY Ural had NONE of the splines lubed when it was built. Found that at the clutch replacement. 100% dry, every one of them.... I'm sure I have the ONLY one built to that high standard.

Thumb Cracked Ural

My 2011 GU has 12,000 km. Could not be happier, if it were not for the body cracks coming from the underside of the sidecar mounted Spot Light.

My DS riding buds tell me the ''cracks'' give it character. They have all changed their mind when I informed them about my warrenty claim.

I requested a warrenty claim through my Ural dealer, Gene, one of the best dealers anyone could buy from. I think it was Jason (Ural's manager) who said the machine was used in a way not intended. We mostly ride this GU off pavement in a DS way. We have led may rides in NM for DS groups using this GU. It regularly carries Carson, a family owned white LAB.
We use the GU much in the same way anyone can see in the Ural ads.

WTF, 2 yr unlimited miles warrenty.......I really don't believe in the '' New World of Ural''. We still have time left on the warrenty because we bought it in 2012.

I do believe the Urals are a better machine than earlier but I think it is the people managing things who are killing these ''fun machines''.

Both my BRO & I intended to wrench on the Ural & eat a few issues & we have.

I guess now we invest in a welder to go w/ our tools & buckets of grease.

What now makes a Ural worth riding/owning, is the great guys that post their ''how to fix it'' . Group like Soviet Steed keep owners learning the ''fix its''.
Plus most of these guys are giving away their ideas. Heck they even go into great detail ''walking an owner through the ''how tos''.

I'm very disappointed in Ural's management in our country (USA).

I am NOT disappointed in our Ural. We will FIX IT !

My dual sport seems more dirt than street.
If that isn't in the realm of a Ural's intended use I'm better off without one.
I'll put a hack on a KLR.

Obviously there are two sides to every story, but I find this deeply troubling if true. If Ural is deeming certain activities as "not intended" now, then they need to spell out what they are. Most of their sales, I know mine was, are based on watching guys like Mr. Cob and others put these bikes through their paces. They would also need to remove certain adverts from their flyers, and pics from their website, IMO.

Cracked Ural

I took pix of the cracks both inside the car & at different angles around the spot light. Emailed them to Gene. Gene (dealer) got back to me pretty quick (same week).

We have been trying to see this in a way that would make us see Ural's point.

Also wondering if we should have removed the spot light first before taking it home.

Now THAT would be a cool setup. I recently met a guy with a DR650 with a hack he charges off road with it!
