Motocross boots? Should I get them?

How much more protection will motocross boots give than standard Danner boots? What are the best motor cross boots for 100 percent street use. I ride a Harley and might grab a set if they offer much more protection. I'm a size 14.

I'm contemplating the change from touring boots to MX boots too, for the street/touring/light dual-sporting combo that I currently do.

Yes, you should get MX boots for riding off the pavement. They offer impact and crush resistance that your Danner boots do not. One broken ankle costs WAAAAAAAAY more than a pair of offroad boots.

My mxboots whip my Redwings ass when it comes to protection. I almost never ride my dirt bike without em. That being said, I never ride my street bIke with the MX either. Too stiff and protective, for me. Im currently looking for a pair of street boots that offer a little more protection than work boots, and am leaning towards the gaerne balance.

Consider the Sidi Adventures. I wear them in the dirt, but they're also my cool weather boot. Much more protective than the Airflow3 boots I use for summer (pretty much May - October here in TX).

Agree with the guys, you should buy MX boots.
This is how my bike ended in a crash

I didn't feel the impact on my feet, and they almost didn't scratch

I wear them year round. They are incred comfortable and seriously protective.

They're very protective, and the buckles help them fit differently sized feet/ankles/shins (like mine). However they are WAY to hot for the 90+ heat here in coastal TX. The Airflow3s are GREAT in the heat, but certainly nowhere near as protective.

None, stick with your Danner's.

Well MX boots offer significant more protection than your Danners.. but do you need it for riding a Harley?? I dont think so.. no reason to swap out your Danners for riding a Harley IMHO.. I rode a Harley for years in Danners.

I did get myself a pair of MX boots once and used them on a 2000km road trip...I been hiked up a hill with them though I will probably not do it again because of heat I experienced. Just to be fair, I was traveling in Malaysia and it is classic equatorial weather (34-36C with sudden showers and sometimes prolonged monsoon rains). At hey were extremely protective though and reasonably comfortable.

Next I got myself a pair of TCX Infinities. Almost as good in protection but loads more comfortable. Waterproof too which made riding in Malaysia a lot more comfortable.

But I found the best street boots for me to be the TCX Competezione. Waterproof. Light. Easy to put on and take off. However, it is certainly not as protective as the MX boots...and probably not as protective as the Infinities as well...though I am not too sure about that.

Either way, try on some and decide if you like the way they feel when you walk around. If you feel comfortable with a pair then you get the best of both worlds.

That's the trade off, protective and harder to ride in. Particularly all plastic ones like SIDI Crossfire which are stiff, at least for a while, and you can't feel the shifter even after they're broken in. At least that's my experience.

Post a pic of you in MX boots on your HD please. Post it in the awesome thread.

Some ff's mentioned gaerne balance boots. They are a trials boot. They would give your ankles more protection than work boots.

Sidi adventures

I have a pair and wear them in the city, touring and off road(light off road). I would get a beefier pair if I was going only off road.

Pros; comfortable. Easy to put on. Not too hot, waterproof and decent protection. I think they are a bit thin and could use more armor in in places.

Cons: Squeeky as hell when walking in them. Soles are wearing out WAAAAY to quickly for a boot that is this much money. Less than one year and mine are nearly toast. The fake vibram soles are crap. Also, by far the most expensive pair of boots/shoes I own except for my ski boots...

What the hell has the model/manufacturer of someone's bike to do with protecting the feet? Falling from any bike can mangle your feet/ankles/lower legs (...said Captain Obvious). I don't get the "Don't you ride an HD? You don't need more protection"...

This weekend I found a sale and took the plunge on this:

One of the so-called "adventure boots", a nice midpoint between the comfort of a street boot and the protection of a MX boot. So far, liking them a lot. AmericanMucle, check them "adventure boots" out.
