Ural Patrol- test ride

what a trip. I rode one today that bike would take some time getting used to

I can see the usefullness of it. didn't have any problem starting it. reverse gear shifted easy. I didn't put the thrid wheel into drive so

interesting ride for sure

I'm hoping to test ride a hack at some point this summer. I'd really like to test out a Patrol. Might finally clear some things up for me on ever wanting to own one. Maybe even take that Hood River hack class if I can get my way to doing it.

Hey Modrover, if you're thinking about a hack. The United Sidecar Association is having its national rally in Stevenson, Washington June 23 to 26. I am sure there will be a lot of Urals there

That'd be a great rally to see. I'll try to fit that in. Thanks for the tip.

I ride my '03 Patrol daily here in Colorado. Lots of fun when you get used to the body english. I carry Ural brochures in the hack trunk("Ural emissary program") and hand them out when anybody shows a strong interest. Two sizes up on main jet, one on pilot, makes patrol a happy camper. Cheers, Dave

OMG I want one of these!...Problem is the 04 V-Strom would have to be sacrificed to pay for it. It'd be a perfect communter for college, pack the trunk full of books etc...no snow days...sweet.

You got to be kidding me!

Guys!

You got to be kidding me! Ural - just old, outdated crap! Based on 1945 BMW.
...and, yes, I did ride it back in Russia ...because nothing else was available. I can tell you exactly in what order parts of this bike ...rrrrrr... crap ... will fail!

Even the newer ones? Agreed the technology is ancient, but so is Harley Davidson and they're pretty easy to maintain (had one for 5 years). I read that the Ural's appeal is that it's rock solid and simple...not so?

Simple - yes, solid - no.
There are not much changed in Ural in last 20 - 30 years. Technology still not best and production quality get even worse.

That's completely wrong. If a rig is "scarry" at that speed, there's something wrong with it. The 650 Urals handle well and can cruise at 50 to 55 mph. The new 750 Urals cruise faster a few mph faster than that

As for reliabilty, once sorted out, they're as reliable as any old technology bike. More tinkering than a new bike, but fit for what they are. The new ones are light years better than the ones even a few years ago.

Anyone that says different hasn't been paying attention

Yep. If you change gear box, rear differential, drive shaft, clutch, all cables, tires, alternator ,....
