Dakar Radiator Problems?

I read a few of the ride reports in www.ozmoto.com.au yesterday and saw that there were a few mentions of the Dakar radiator failing. Has anyone experienced this problem here?

Pissed Ours Failed

Dealer is blaming it on damage and is not warrantying it. Picking it up tomorrow and taking it to another dealer and ultimately BMW.

We have done some research on this. Go to the Chain Gang website and see additional information about the radiator issues.

thanks K12RSSteve, I'll have a look Chain Gang. I haven't had anything major (yet?) just some coolant leaks around one of the gaskets. It sounds like it could be a common problem though.

Fan issues too

There seems to be a lot of talk about the fans too... recall on them even... I don't get it, there's so many problems related to these thumper radiators and yet the dealer chalks it up to damage... Good luck to you. I already checked the NHTSA site and there wasn't any technical bulletins on the 2002 model you may want to check it out if yours is different http://www.nhtsa.gov

History -

Lotsa 'frame' brakeages (actually gearbox mounts) On R11GSes in OZ (very much less in the rest of the world)

Now
F650 radiator problems ? mainly in OZ?

But that does not make sense when a new one before installation in a bike fails the pressure test.... bad batch?

In that ride report on ozmoto I forgot to add that Tom Byrne MC (one of the Sydney BMW dealers) managed to get BMW Australia to change it for free even though it was out of warranty by about 6 months. Now I guess that part has some form of warranty so if it goes they will replace that. Not a problem since though in 12,000k of riding.

QuickSteel is a good thing to carry - it provided a temporary fix to the one at Urandangi that was leaking - interestingly a 2000 model that took 2 years and a lot of ks to go.

2000 model, 20,000 k`s on the clock...It looks like I'd better add some QuickSteel to the toolkit before my next adventure - Lake Mungo in November...thanks Jas.

Cry it happened!

we rode up to Mungo, then Pooncarie, Menindee, Wilcannia, White Cliffs, Mutawinji National Park, Broken Hill, Hattah then home to Melbourne.

As we pulled into Hattah I could smell the radiator fluid burning on the exhaust (mmm...love that smell). It didn`t seem like a massive rupture and we were taking it easy the next day so I didn`t make any repairs. The local BM dealer has one in stock ($AU266.40) so I think that I will have to get that and put it on ASAP and hope that it is only a bad batch. With any sort of luck I will be upgrading to an Adventure before the next 20,000k`s is up so I won`t need a new radiator. I wonder what surprises I am in for on the Adventure.

Bad computer issue. Not sending enough amperage to the fan. Replaced under warratny by a real dealer.

Never going back to the smucks that refused to really diagnose the problem. Working great now.
