Das Beast is now legal
It happened yesterday.
After limping through The Gathering of the Clans with a stitched up toe, I made it there in my Audi TT. Shame on you if you were within 500 miles and missed it. Great food, good people, and airheads of all shapes and sizes - and a couple other interesting bikes too. Post return, I got a call from Rick Jones. He was down on US321 in Tennessee with a broken shifter on his R80G/S. Within minutes I had a truck and was heading west on I-40. It could not have gone any easier. 3 hours later we rolled into Asheville and stopped at my friend Jim's house. On showing him the problem, he said "...let's go to the shop and weld it up". 10 minutes later it was better than new. Once back at The Church of the Horizontally Opposed Air Cooled Twin, I sprayed on a little black Rustoleum to tie a bow around the job. Rick helped me get Das Beast off the lift, and we rolled my R60/2, aka Mojo up on the lift for the next job, cleaning the crap out of the tank. Dinner was ready... SWMBO had a great feed of pasta and free range chicken. After Rick departed Monday a.m. for his safe return to Motorrad Elektrik World HQ, I decided to try to put on some boots... my toe still has 10 stitches and it's broken. Happily, I could loosen up the boots enough to strap in... I was off to the inspection station - only after putting 32 lbs. into the new Battle Axes front and rear. US$13.20, I had inspection done. The inspector didn't even much look at it. Mileage? 999. (new rebuilt speedo installed). Back at Chateau Loco I logged into the NCDMV web site. Now a sticker is on the way to make it truly legal. Oh boy... Now I can do some big miles. 11.9 liters of fuel make for big continental drifting.

Das Beast flat flies. Post the main season, plans are to poke around a little. It started life as a 1981 R100RS, but it was raced at Daytona in 2000.
There is still a lot of safety wire on it from it's racing days. You crack the throttle on it, you best have some room.

Seat cover is an old sheepskin from way, way back. I think I bought in Pennsylvania riding my R75/7 back in '86 or so. It has had a life ;)
I should have the sticker for the plate soon. Looking forward to that. Took the R60/2 tank off "mojo" to the car wash to scrub hard. I had it soaking in POR-15 "Marine Clean" for a couple days. Got 90% of the grott out of it. It is currently upside down on an old cooler in the garage. I took a drill with a nylon paint stripper to it and got rid of paint damaged by gas. Next, sandable primer. Once that dried, I keyed it again with light sandpaper and sponged on POR-!5 in simi-gloss black. Post 24 hours + of curing, I should have Mojo up and running by the weekend. Then I can fix the fuel line in Vivian, my 1971 Dodge D100 pickup. Great firewood, mulch and bike hauler for decades.

NC registration sticker just showed up, so she is 100% legal.
I just have to smile. $18 to register it. I have less than $1200 in the entire bike.

Best news of the day. I finished cleaning and POR-15 (exterior bottom) of "Mojo" my 1966 BMW R60/2. Three kicks, she exploded to life! Damn good old machine.
Mojo was my only transportation for 4 years when my parents both had cancer. 30 miles apart, and I lived 115 miles away in Athens GA. Athens to Brevard NC to Hendersonville NC and back to Athens was common on Mojo. 2 and sometimes 3 times a week. I'll be buried with that bike. It has never left me standing on the side of the road.
