Cindy Thill/Special to the Sun Forest Service firefighters responded to a wildland fire Sept. 2 north and east of the town of Kernville. The “Slides” fire was reported at approximately 1:27 p.m. The fire was located on the east side of the Kern River north of the Johnsondale Bridge area. It started on the lower third of a west facing slope and immediately spread uphill, burning easterly in grass and scattered brush, into several rock out croppings. By evening the fire was reported to be approximately 100 acres with a 10% containment. As of early Tuesday morning, the fire was over 270 acres and 50% contained. The following trails have been temporarily closed due to emergency fire activity:
2. River Trail #33E30 3. Cedar Canyon Trail #33E26 Currently no injuries have been reported. There are no threats to any structures. Incident Commander, Angie Sanchez stated, “The fuels (grass and brush) are extremely dry this time of year. The quick response from our air support assisted in slowing this fire’s progression.” With safety first, 175 fire fighting personnel and equipment from the US Forest Service are aggressively attacking the fire utilizing helicopters, air attack and air tankers, smoke jumpers, handcrews, engines, and patrols. Access for ground crews is a one and one-half hour hike as the terrain is extremely steep and rocky. Smoke jumpers, temporarily stationed in Porterville, from their home base in Redding, are assisting the firefighting efforts along with an Air Tanker from Cal-Fire. Forest Service Law Enforcement and fire personnel were stationed at the Johnsondale Bridge, making contact with forest visitors coming off of the River Trail. The cause of the fire is under investigation. If you witnessed any suspicious activity in or around the River Trail and/or the Johnsondale Bridge area, or have information regarding this fire, please contact the National Forest Hotline number at (559) 294-4894. |

![]() lets hope it goes towards kennedy and not the green hill ![]() plus there is another fire in jawbone!!! anybody know where this is what it affects! Firefighters continue to put out hot spots on the Jawbone Complex fires, approximately ten miles west of the Jawbone Visitor Center. The fires have burned 12,462 acres; however, officials say the fires are nearly 100 percent contained. More than 1,150 total personnel were assigned to the fire, but many have already been released to fight other fires as the rest continue to maintain control

Kern "slides" fire
We saw the FS Helicopters out of Fairview working the fire Monday afternoon, they were just over the ridge from us.
The terrain up there IS very steep and rocky... You can see the helibase in the center of this picture. The fire is just over the ridge.
