PHX - Prescott Trails Less Ridden

Yardstick led Slowred and I on a hunting party discovery tour. Hunting for trails on the PNF TMR (Prescott National Forest Travel Management Rule) map and discovering that these trails don't appear to exist in real life. We did come prepared for such contingencies.

Yardstick sporting the True Temper Total Control hatchet and matching travel sized folding saw.

Slowred sporting the petite folding shovel and Ray-Ban sunglasses.

Nightstalker goes large with the Herkimer Master Cutter with knuckle guard and Army/Navy surplus approved folding shovel.

Yardstick looking for the 89 trail.

The mountain was covered with these rocks growing out of the earth.

Defeated we continued on 9262H. Slowred scored a flat!

Tools were uncased and the work began.

Out with the old tube and in with the new. Turn on the compressor and wait for the bead to seat.

Passing the windmill on 87A.

Not much traffic on 9262K.

We found trail 89 for a bit. Single track as promised.

It was a scary 7 foot drop if you fell off this off camber ledge.

Easy approach though, NOT!

We're all safely through.

Trail 89 turned out to be a bust. We could see where it climbed the mountain in the distance, but couldn't follow it to get there :(

Returning to 87A.

87A is actually a ton of fun!! Trail 9219 climbing the hill in the distance. We'll have to go back and give that a shot.

On 87A

87A took us over to Poland Road which runs up to Breezy Pines. Saw this trail on the way and decided to check it out.

After a couple of miles of rocks and hill, the trail ended at the foundation of this old home.

Heading back down to Poland Road.

Nice vista.

Took trail 285 up toward Mount Davis to where it crosses 284 - Yankee Doodle trail. For some reason this 1 mile section of 284 is closed to motorized vehicles. The rest of 284 is motorized. Not sure why they did that??

285 turned out to be a great trail with steep climbs/descents, rocks, and tight switchbacks.

I was tired and out of water, so once we got off 285, I voted for the quick way to the trucks.

Passing the "Lower" Yankee Doodle trail - closed due to the Gladiator fire.

New fire cut across this ridge line.

Stopped in Mayer for some grub on the way out. This place looked a little risky from the outside, but the burgers and service were great!!

Yardstick burger.

Slowred burger.

Great pics and RR NS! It was a fun day of exploring. Lots of dead ends and NF roads/trails that didn't exist. Here are a couple that I shot.

Yardstick plotting his sinister plan.

Who has the coolest vanity plate in AZ?

This guy!

Some of these "trails" hadn't seen traffic in awhile. Nightstalker

This short section was tricky. NS clearing with ease in this direction. We had to spot each other going the opposite way. Cost of failure was you and your bike at the bottom of a 7 ft drop!

Another of a long list of dead ends.

Two happy guys resting in a cooler shady spot.

Arrastra Trail closed at the bottom due to the fires.

The Prescott National Forest is nice enough to provide Google Earth KMZ files of roads and trails in the forest. Unfortunately, their cartographers suck! This was meant to be an exploration ride to find new (to us) trails, but following the PNF tracks proved to be difficult at best. Looking back at the ride tracks vs. the PNF tracks and overlaying them on Google Earth, I can see where there are major inaccuracies that caused us to travel significantly off the real track ( visible via satellite image) more than once. Couple that problem with the fact that many trails are categorized wrong and it's a recipe for a lot of dead-ends.

First up was getting to the 87A road. Obviously this is an active route.

Which way now?

This was the best I could do finding the start of the 89 Trail aka Chalk Springs Trail.

It has a number and a name and is even shown as a trail in my GPS map!

These rocks tilted on edge were treacherous. Some were so thin and angled just right that they were hard to see.

Slowred didn't hit one of the thin, sharp rocks, but did manage to get a flat.

Another attempt at the Chalk Springs Trail led to decreasing sign of the trail and increasing brush. This is the trail down to the corner with the 7 foot drop at the apex.

Signs of the trail eventually faded beyond what we could reasonably call a trail. I can make out faint tracks on Google Earth that show we should have turned south from this point.

Sorry guys, it's time to turn around again!

If only our skills matched that tire. A quick berm shot would get us around the corner, but the penalty for failure was too high.

Back to the more obvious 87A road.

With crazy clouds over our heads.

Further along the 87A road.

We saw other roads/trails heading into the hills, but I hadn't planned on going this far North and didn't load the tracks.

Trail #4 Grapevine (listed as High Clearance 4WD trail) looks like a good one, but is only open to feet or hooves. We were looking for 9434, the Little Wolf Trail anyway.

Apparently this end of the Little Wolf Trail (listed as a singletrack motorcycle trail) isn't for us either.
