Colorado Singletrackin 2012

This years installment of some fine Colorado singletrack. Due to low snowpack and a very dry spring our higher elevation singletrack is open earlier than normal. My buddy Rich and I did a little early season exploring.
Parking area congestion at the start of the day:

The ride started off with a steep climb, I had just changed my sprockets and chain and inadvertently ended up with the stock gearing, which was too high for some of this stuff, clutch abuse was soon to follow.

Last year when I rode this trail I was on a 2-stroke, this year I rode a 4-stroke 450, the big bike defiantly runs stronger up high and isn't as finicky about jetting, you pay a price in the added weight though. Rich also rode his 4-stroke WR450.

After the steep climb we were rewarded with some smoother trails. Here's Rich kicking up a little dust.

What a great day to be riding, it doesn't get much better than this!

Some exposure in a few places, not a place to be if you're afraid of heights!

Some days are better than others, this was a GREAT day to be above ground!

This was the first time riding this area for Rich, I believe he had fun.

Let's go that way

Still a few places with snow, during a normal year we wouldn't be riding here until mid to late July.

Don't choke here, big penalty if you don't make it

This tree just about took my head off

We dropped in elevation and got below timberline, even though we were between 9,000 - 10,000 feet, it was still very warm.

There's bears in these here hills!!

Here's Rich summoning his inner rock star, I think he just saw the movie Rock of Ages and had a Tom Cruise moment right there in the forest.

We had to navigate back down the mountain, in some places the forest was thick with vegetation.

Switchbacks are not my favorite obstacle

Eventually we made our way back to the truck, we came out on a paved back road and had to ride about 6 miles of state highway to get back to the trail head. All in all a great day of riding in the beautiful Colorado mountains with my buddy Rich.

Trail encounters: 2 friendly hikers encountered during the first mile of trail, we stopped and chatted with them, courtesy and friendliness go a long ways!

3 other dirt bikes, with one 67yo guy riding with 2 younger guys, I sure hope I can be out there riding when I'm 67.
