Apple Jam & Mustang Shelly go to Hell(s)

Still all smiles, before the pain of riding a 2X4 all the way to Hell's Canyon had set in

The Clampetts have arrived That big orange pig with the moto-mule trailer can sure haul a lot!

A stop at the fossil beds was in order and this is the Clarno Palisades. While parked at the paleontology visitor center a Harley dude asked "what kind of bike is that?" I replied, "KTM." The look I got was this Apparently the ONLY bike on the planet is a Harley.

Then we found this sweet road that followed the North Fork John Day for many miles

Sunset through the trees in camp that night. Gotta peaceful, easy feeling

The spectacular view from the road up Mount Harris.

And yes, we had a blast at the Hell's Canyon gathering It was well worth the trip and the pain in the ass that may never go away.

This is a pretty big deal for Mustangshelly, her FIRST ever ADV Ride Report
Four days and three nights and 550 miles on a DR200 on the way to an ADV Event !!

Her FIRST BIG ADVENTURE and,...
....her first nights camping in middle-of-no-where Oregon, without motorhome backup

I am very proud and very happy to have shared 8 days, and over 1300 miles total,
....on motos and in the outdoors, with my Tweeter of 23 years.

Thanks for checking in on us, RM

Night #1 on the road brought us South of Fossil, at the first of the County Campgrounds you'll see.

Beginning day #2, we meet the John Day River again, and run alongside it all the way to Dayville

After a visit at the Fossil Beds Nation Monument's Palientology Center, we head back North to Monument, then NE to Long Creek for gas.
This is Big Sky Country for us Oregonians:

From Long Creek, we get great advice from an Old Timer about a section of road that rides along the North Fork of the John Day.
This was an old dirt road I had seen in an RR from 2 years ago, and have been wanting to ride ever since

After a neat twisty section of pavement to Ritter along the Middle Fork JDR,
we ride up and over a big gravel hill, our first gravel since we left on our Adventure.
Way up there somewhere we see an old Schoolhouse, Three Mile School, that had been converted into what looked like somebody's vacation house...

gotta go walk the Hooligan Hounds that haven't seen us in a week.....so,...to be continued...

Next to this fancy bridge,

we find a great dispersed campspot by the river:

Nobody drove by this spot in the middle of the night, or likely, in the last few DAYS...
We felt alone, it was awesome

The next day, we get an appropriate slow start, and pass by an old homestead.
Yeah, I could live here....

In the middle of Day #3 we head into Ukiah, get some fresh maps at the Forest Service,
and see fellow ADVer hvman at the General Store !!

He was on his way back home, he wasn't gonna make it to Hells Canyon after all.
The sore shoulder won, and began to make his trip less fun.
But it sure was great to share a lunch with you there, Jerry !!

Now, I'm off to bed, it's late, and we're beat.
We'll have to tell you about Ukiah - North...
...sometime after a good night's sleep tonight, and a bad day's work tomorrow

good job Mustang Sal!!! Hells canyon very nice, jealous

Jeff, not enough riding these days, you need to get out and ride more...that trailer setup you have for the camp caravan is way cool.

PM if you're interested in a 2nd annual mosier camp out and/or east side hood ride this summer...

Great RR and photos, thanks for sharing it with all of us who had other commitments and couldn't make it. I'm looking forward to the rest of the trip.

Way to go Shelly! Nice to see a new ride report of your trip.

Unfortunately, Adventure's twin sister is "Discomfort". Rest assured, when you look back on this trip in the future, I'm sure you'll only remember the smiles and good times. Now replace that 2x4, get a warmer sleeping set-up* and get to planning that next adventure - summer starts tomorrow after all.

* I sleep "cold" also. Things that helped me when tyring to sleep when camping in the cold:
- Long johns, warm socks, warm shirt for bed clothes
- Good, insulated sleeping pad along with a GOOD Quality bag
- Stocking hat (PITA to sleep with, but really helps being cold all night)
- Sleeping bag liner (can add a few extra degrees, plus is nice to use on top of your bag for warm nights/naps).
