The road was rocky and slippery in places. It was fun and challenging on my big fully loaded bike. It would have been a blast on a CRF450

Peru

Here is one of the many waterfalls coming down the shear cliffs in to the canyon. On top shrouded in the clouds, the lake is nearly completely surrounded by 6000 meter (20,000 foot) glacier covered peaks

I was releaved when I finally made it up to the lake without dumping my bike. There was no one around to help me pick it up
The lake had a glacier covered mountain in the background

I parked my bike at the end of the road and hiked around the lake which took about 3 hours. Hiking at 13,700 is exhausting. I could only imagine what it would be like to climb one of the 20,000 foot peaks around the lake

At the end of the lake, there was this peak that reminded me of the mountain in Paramount Pictures or the Materhorn. I waited for the clouds to clear to get a good shot. This was the best I got. I could only imagine how incredible it would be up at Lake Peron on a clear day to see at those peaks in their full glory

Near the trail head, there was this cool little shelter that I considered spending the night in. It was raining at that point. I was not looking forward to riding that slick dirt road down the mountain in the rain. But I was looking forward to having a good dinner that night in Huaraz.......Loma Satando and a Cusquena Negra

This shot shows how the road snakes up the steep canyon. The road engineers in Peru have to be some of the best in the world.

After two incredible days in the mountains in Peru (Pato Canyon and Hauscaran National Park), I headed up to 4200 meters for 4000 feet of vertical downhill on a mountain bike

I hired a guide to show me some of the areas best single tracks. And I thought I was crazy. This guy was absolutely nuts! We did some stuff that I had to walk my bike down. I crashed twice hard trying to keep up with this guy. After that, I took it easy. I had a long way to go around the world, and I couldn't do that with a broken arm

Not all hostels and hotels are the same. This was one of the better ones in Huaraz. It was actually in someones house. It was like staying with a family. They had a nice living room area to hang out in complete with a fireplace to warm the room on a cool night at 10,000 feet

The town of Huaraz is the adventure capital in Peru offering all kinds of activities for those seeking a bit of excitement. The day I left town, the clouds cleared and I rode out of town on the most beautiful day. You could see the tallest mountain in Peru clearly at 6800 meters.

Riding out of Huaraz is amazing. The road follows the Santa River up to 13,500 before dropping in the desert towards Lima. But it never feels that high because you are surrounded by mountains that go all the way up to the top of the sky.

It was raining at the top of the climb up the mountain to the pass that drops down to Lima.
Look how flat it is here.
But I am at 13,500 feet.
Crazy
