Most of the wineries make Pisco too.
Here is the equipment to make Pisco
It is interesting because most of what is produced in the process is waste.
It's the kind of alcohal that will kill you

Riding thru the vineyards.
It's like nothing I have even seen.
Grapevines on one side of the road and sand dunes on the other

And after your day of wine tasting, you can go whitewater rafting.
I wanted to go kayaking but I didn''t have the time.
I needed to get to Ica by 7 pm. I was meeting someone there.
Priorities

I took this picture in the desert about an hour north of Ica Peru.
The sun is setting over the dunes and the ocean off in the distance.
I was packing too much stuff to give Cathe a ride to Ica so she was taking a bus there. I was meeting her there at 7 pm.
For the first time on my trip, I was starting to reconsider how much crap I was packing.

Wine tasting

The next day, Cathe and I set off for the wineries. The hard case in the passenger area comes off with the key in about 2 seconds so I made room for cathe to ride with me to the wineries.
The first stop was El Catador.
We had an early lunch there.
The lamb and chicken were both very good.
Once we got some food in our stomach, we were given a personal tour of the winery by a guy named Eduardo - but I called him Lalo.

I have enough pictures of me on this blog so I thought I would put more of Cathe.
The winery made more Pisco than wine. We learned all about the process of making Pisco

This is how they crush the grapes in this 150 year old press.
The grapes get crushed by that giant hunk of wood and the juice flows out the concrete pool thru a pipe to a collection bin
Pretty traditional methods

The wine is then fermented and stored in these ceramic containers.
No oak here

Heading off to the next winery - Tacama. It is one of the best wineries in Peru. There are hundreds of wineries in Peru. some are guys making wine out of their garage. And some guys are not even using grapes to make the wine. They combine some sort of plants with Methanol alcohol. And that combination can kill you. So it pays to drink the good stuff

Like the wineries in California, Tacama has beautiful grounds to enjoy your time wine tasting

Also at Tacama, we got another personal tour of the winery. It seems like it is the norm to get a tour before you get to try their wines.
