From Parnu, I headed south in to Latvia.
I stayed a night in Riga, the capital.
Like Tallinn, it was really cool.

There was this old church in the old town that you could go up in the tower (for $10).
I splurged because I wanted to see the town from the lookout.
There were pictures of the church tower on fire back in 1940.
It wasn't bombed.
It was just set on fire.
The church was a near total loss

Here's the view of Riga from the church tower.
Pretty cool sight on a picture perfect day

The Freedom Tower in Riga.
The Latvians appreciate their freedom every bit as much as us Americans.

I spotted this beauty on the street in downtown Riga
At first, I thought it was an old BMW but the flatheads and the fins looked different.
I saw "CCCP" stamped on the frame. It must be a Russian copy from post WWII.
I wish I could have found the owner, I would have liked to buy it.

I got a late start heading out of Riga. I headed northwest to Kolka Point.
There I wanted to find a remote place to camp on the beach and this is what I found.....

The next morning I hiked along the beach at Kolka Point. If you look at a map of Latvia, it is the point all the way in the north that extends out in to the Baltic Sea.
Beautiful spot pretty much all to myself

Big radio antenna that used to be used for spying on the US. Now it is used for research.

Driving around the back roads in Latvia, you will notice a lot of cars pulled over on the side of the road for no apparent reason. What the people are doing is picking mushrooms. They love their mushrooms here. And I do too! And I was their in the heart of the season

The quest for sleep

Everyone tells me that I am living the dream.
People ask me a lot of the same questions.
One question they ask is what I miss.
Surprisingly I tell them I miss having a routine.
It is comfortable having a routine.
You already know how your day is going to go first thing in the morning, even though it might be dreary and boring.
But for me, I have no idea what is in store for me for good or bad.
And at the end of the day, I have no idea where I am going to be or where I am going to sleep.
So I usually spend some time before it gets dark trying to find a good spot to camp.
Here is a picture story of my quest for sleep on this one particular day.

Quest for sleep

I found this beach that I thought might be a good spot to camp.
I pull my moto on to the sand and I nearly just it stuck.
In the end, I had visions of that time in Panama when the tide came up quickly and swamped my motorcycle

I had to use a lot of power to get myself off the beach.
I am glad I am using the Heidenaus and not some ordinary street tire.
Look how deep the groove in the sand is

There are a lot of abandoned buildings in Latvia. In this case, I found what looked like an abandoned city.
It was near the radio antenna. I can just imagine that these building were built during the cold war and filled with people trying to spy on the US.
Now they are just decaying concrete reminders of a time past.
And BTW, they didn't make for a good camping spot as the buildings were filled with debris and pigeon turds.

Here's a typical Soviet made concrete apartment building.
It is funny because some are occupied and some are gutted and empty.
It just doesn't make sense.
Not a good spot to camp because it is too close to people.....lots of people
