This was a first for me
They were rebuilding the bus transmission in the middle of the road.
Makes much better sense than towing it to the nearest shop

The problem, of course, is that they NEVER clean up the oil. Come around a corner in a hurry....

Keep 'em coming, Ed.

Hey... as a matter of interest, how come you can't get more than one photo in per post? This a tablet issue?

I almost got shot in Laos

And if i did, i couldn't blame anyone but myself.

I am actually about a week behind in my report but this story is too good to wait.

I was in the capital city of Vientiane. Laos is a poor country but there is some wealth in the big city here.
There are fancy cars, restaurants and bars here. I haven't seen that kind of thing since i left Thailand.
In fact, i found 3 bars that sell beer from Belgium.
I was going thru Chimay withdrawals.and i went big and bought a few bottles.
Karmaliet too
And then i went bowling in town. It was only about a buck a game and it was something to do.
And since i spent so much money on beer, i blew my budget, couldn't afford a hotel room and decided to camp along the Mekong river that night.
There is a huge sand bar separating the town from the river
It was about midnight when i rode out on to the sand.
I found out that my bike sucks in the deep sand.
Not because its too heavy
It doesnt have enough power to get any speeed up. So i rode in first gear with the motor near redline the whole way.
When i tried to shift in to second, the motor would bog down so i had to shift back to first
I finally made it about half a mile out to the river and it was a perfect spot. And so beautiful.
There was no moon and lots of stars out.
When i shut off the motor and lights i turned back at the lights from the city. I could see a couple of police motorcycles riding back and forth along the river frontage road.
I could also see a couple of flashlights down in the river bed coming my way.
I watched for a while and the motorcycles drove away and the flashlights disappeared..
Someone was definitely looking for me. But after 15 minutes, there were no signs of anyone so i figured they gave up
So i got out my tent and started to put it up. But i turned around and saw a figure coming toward me. I just stood there and watched. And then there were others moving toward me from a different direction.
I had my tent sticks in my hand and one guy walked cautiously closer.
It was dark so i couldn't see well. But as he got near, i could see that he had a small gun in his hand. And it was pointing right at me.
I asked if he was police and he said.....yes.
He grabbed the tent sticks from my hand thinking it might be a weapon i was holding. Remember, it was very dark.
Five other guys approached me with much bigger guns. They surrounded me. It didnt take them long to figure out i was pretty harmless.
Since the other side of the river was Thailand, they figured i was up to no good......maybe a drug smaggler or something
In all, i had eight guys with guns around me. They didnt speak much English. They spent about 15 minutes going thru all my bags in detail.
I am glad i dont do drugs otherwise things would have turned out much different.
After about a half hour, they were satisfied that i was just a stupid gringo wanting to camp by the river. They told me that i had to leave
I tried to allow me to stay but there was no flexability. They were holding all the cards....or the guns in this case.
I was lucky i didnt go to jail
Or shot for that matter. If i would have made a wrong move as he had his gun trained on me as he approached me in the dark, i would be a dead man for sure. I could see how my tent sticks could have looked like a gun.

All and all, i have to say the Laos police were very professional and pretty nice for just letting go.

I left and found another camp spot just outside of town. It was past 2 am at that point. I had a good laugh and then quickly feel asleep

I got out my tent and started to er

Good move, Ed... not mucking with the Laos police. I pulled up at a disturbance in Pakse, Laos about a year ago... and was watching a guy with a 45 pistol tucked in the back of his trousers.... and then the bullets started to fly, so I left. Came back an hour later and all was quiet. The plainclothes police guy with the pistol was still there... I did a thumbs up / thumbs down... and he did a thumbs down. They'd shot the guy.

I'm just about to write up some guys letting fly with a pistol over on the Burma border... it pays to be careful

Take care

At this point, i can't imagine regretting my decision.
Even if i am living in a one bedroom apartment and driving an econ-box
But it is easy for me to say that now
The way i look at it.....i can always get back the big house and fancy cars, but i can never get back my time.
My time is my most valuable asset
And while i am healthy, i want to make themost of it
And i think that i am doing just that.

You are!

And thanks for taking us along. Seems like the pictures/reports are a bit more sporadic now days - is the report becoming a drag, or maybe WIFI is tough to find down there? I'm amazed that you are able to report as much as you are, for as long as you have, but appreciate it when you do. I think there are lots of us that follow along that don't post much, but we are still here enjoying your adventures. Stay safe-ish .
