After playing with the monkey in the hot springs, we headed to the beach town of Santa Catalina. It is another small surf town on the pacific coast. And when I say "small"......I mean the town.....not the surf.
We rode our motorcycles out on the beach and went for a swim. In this picture, check out how far the water was from our bikes. We didn't realize it.......but the tide was coming in..........FAST!!!!!!

We were out playing in the waves for about 15 minutes and some guy came out and said we needed to go move our bikes as the tide was coming in fast and the water was at our bikes. Here is what we found when we turned around and looked at our bikes on the beach.......

We had all of our stuff piled up on our bikes and by the time we moved everything off, we were well in the water

Poor Nick didn't move his bike fast enough and the kickstand sunk in to the sand and his bike fell over. And all of his riding gear fell in to the water. Everything was wet and covered in sand.
And to make maters worse, there was a river that we crossed coming on to the beach. It was only a few inches deep when we crossed it at low tide. But when the tide came in, the river got waste deep with salt water. I was able to make it across (just barely). But poor Nick didn't and he and his bike had to stay and camp on the beach all night on the other side of the river

Well, Nick got up early and took off. He is catching a cargo plane for Colombia. He had to leave early so he could cross the river at low tide.
I got up and rented a Channel Islands surf board and surfed at this hollow point break here at Santa Catalina Panama. I caught one of the longest rights (wave) of my life! The take offs were really steep and it would barrel over you on the drop ins. It was pretty scarry because the waves broke over a shallow reef. So far, I have surfed in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and now Panama. Cowabunga dude!

I am going to be needing tires in about 2000 miles for the rear and about 4000 more for the year. I might need to get them in Colombia as I hear tires are hard to find in my size in Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. I need to check the valves, change the spark plugs and oil and clean the air filter soon. And then I should be good to go in So America. I have almost 30,000 miles on the bike now. Not bad considering almost all those miles were done in the past eight months |

I was planning to do the other one as you suggested but I wasnt paying attention and missed the turn. I didnt realize it until I got to the Paso border. And it was the easiest border crossing so far. Either that or I have become more patient. Ha |
