Great build, thanks for sharing all the pics.

Been following this guy Joe Baker, he builds a lot of
vanagon, synchro, etc suby transplants and conversions.

Gets upwards of $60k for the finished ready to rock versions.

Near Redding California.

Well we have almost 4K miles on the Syncro since it's been back on the road, It's been running great and problem free! We've been on several camping trips with it since the redwoods trip, just this weekend my Father, my son and I did another 650 miles going to the Arlington Airshow and back. :-)

The more I use this van the more I like it! I really love the size of the van, it lets you go anywhere a normal car would go plus you have all the benefits of having your home with you at all times. Being able to make your meals whenever your hungry or take a nap whenever you want it great! Can't wait to head out again soon!

Here's a few shots from this weekends trip.

We left home and headed for the air show hoping to get a space in the RV camping section, in years past they have been full. We arrived and found a lot of open spaces, Sweeeet! They had a few spaces open in the first row, best seats in the house for the airshow! We held a space next to us for our friends that were going to arrive later that night. Another westy was already camping a few rows over, after talking to them they moved down to Westy row...sweet a Westy camp out!

We were right at the end of the taxi way so all the planes coming in and out of the show taxied right past us....Oh yeah!

Globe Swift performing in the airshow.

Now that's what a roof rack is for!

P-51 and P-47 doing a fly by. Man the sound was awesome!

Taxing back in behind the Westy's. This P-51 flew three sorties on D-day in WW2!

My son getting ready to take his first airplane ride...in a 1929 New Standard Biplane! He loved it! The first words he said when we landed...."That was Awesome!". :-)

Hey...there's our Westy's down there!

Giant gas powered RC tank!

Ryan checking out the scale town where the RC tanks were doing battle throughout the day.

Someones home made non running art bike. It's for sale....$150K lol.

Cool half track being restored.

Breakfast time!

Watching the airshow.

Took Steven's pass on the way back home, stopped in Levenworth to stretch and enjoy some good food :-)

Jeezus those prices are just stupid. Hodaka, you ought to sell that thing and build something else with the money. Like a house.

Agreed. Nice van, but for that kind of money, the options start looking really compelling. When you get up past $50k, you can have a full size diesel truck, with a camper back that will be more comfortable, have more capacity in every way, and better off-road capability. Cheaper to fix, too.

There are some inherent compromises with trucks and campers though, and there aren't many options when it comes to suitable AWD platforms to build anything of this nature on, but still... stupid.

Yeah the prices of these things have really gone through the roof in the past few years. I thought about going with a truck/camper as well...in the end I just like the Westy better. Kinda hard to explain but nothing else is quite like the complete package of the westy.

Doing all the work yourself is the best way to get into a Westy and make it "affordable". The more we use ours the more I love this thing!

I just had a very interesting debate about the topic of price on TheSamba.

Most of the owners seem to think its ALL about their "classic nature" and "the drive"....but if that were *really* the case, the sleek tintop 2wd versions would be the highest valued and not the 4x4 campers

Westys are very cool!.......but.....about half of what makes them so cool is what they can do as far as a compact adventure vehicle for camping. There just isn't *really* anything like it in the USA still. I'm pretty sure if VW had kept bringing campers here into the current T5 4 Motion California, that it would actually put a dent in the old Westys prices. People wouldn't "have to" do engine conversions to make them livable, etc, etc.

The last of the VW vans that came to the USA was the very limited number of T4 Eurovans and Eurovan campers. Which all the hardcore Vanagon guys think is a soulless vehicle. Yet the prices remain REALLY high for the camping versions. Why? Because it fits the unique niche of the small Poptop camper like the Vanagons.

I bet if some of the of hate manufacturers made camper versions of smaller vans they would be popular.

Just saying'

Really inspirational stuff here, Hodakaguy.

You've motivated me to get out there and show my beloved (but neglected) '85 some attention

My Father, our friends the Shaffer's and I went to the Rose City Bug In this weekend. Had a great time and talked to a lot of great people at the show. Man there was some really awesome vehicles there!

Can't wait for the next one!

Went down on Sat and stayed the night at a truck stop in Troutdale OR, found out later that we could have camped right at the show that night :-(....Oh well, next year!

The line starting to form to get in on Sat morning. Glad we arrived early, the line stayed like this for over a hr once they started rolling in!

Home sweet home for the day. Talked to a lot of great people at the show.

Cruising the swap section...bought a really cool vintage calcium carbide toy cannon. :-)

The show was HUGE and had a TON of really nice VW's!

The Syncro ran great on the trip...no issues and smooth sailing :-)
