Rt. 8, heading north. I've ridden by here 50 times, at least. Finally made a point of stopping. Seems like I'm always in a rush to get somewhere.

Time for some winter rye. Creasy Chapel Road.

The weather had been fantastic for most of a week around here; lows in the 40's and 50's, highs in the 60's, dry, bright and sunny.

This day, however, a front was rolling through and the weather didn't look too promising. It wouldn't have mattered if a monsoon had struck me, I was going to ride this afternoon, regardless.

In the last two shots, there's some blue poking through...

The wind came up rather quickly and started trying to finish off the leaves.

Wally! I'm trying to keep it interesting. Looking forward to spring already.

A quick ride down through Dry Pond and onto the Ararat Hwy. Up in Maine, we would call this a "wicked good road".

On to the Squirrel Spur. I caught a view I hadn't seen before from where someone has cleared to build a house.

Sing it, Willie.

There's a scenic overlook about halfway up Squirrel Spur that someone donated and built a couple years ago. Nice place to stop for lunch.

Pilot Mtn. again. The weather front is blowing through quickly.

Carol Ann keeps me fed.

Looking east, into the Kibler Valley. The Dan River is down there, behind the first ridge.

The front blew on through while I ate lunch. I'd say the temperature dropped about 10 degrees in the half hour I was stopped.

I covet this place every time I go by. You can see how windy it was up there; it's around 2800' here.

Squirrel Spur merges with Dugspur and continues on to Laurel Fork @ US 58. They have fixed the blind intersection there that was a problem if you were crossing US 58 from the north; they were just wrapping things up there. I have heard they are going to 4-lane US 58 all the way from Meadows of Dan to Hillsville. They have done some of it; I sure hope they don't ruin the whole road.

I got behind a farm vehicle and a tractor, so I deviated as soon as I could. Hadn't planned to hit any gravel, but I'm easy.

Hylton Rd.

That merged into Mat Rd. which intersected with Shelor Rd.

That took me to Buffalo Mtn. Rd. and then I spotted Long Mtn. Rd. This looks promising.

From there it was Buffalo Rd., Childress Rd., Adams Branch, and Bolt Mill. I think. At that point I was in "wander" mode.

Stoooopit deer.

Turned out to be pretty chilly and windy, but who can argue with this?

Eventually I came to Connor Grove Rd., one of Southern Virginia's best kept secrets. Ride it yourself and see...

A short run down the BRP to Meadows of Dan and US 58.

Quick stop at Lover's Leap. There's some good riding down in that valley, too.

All that's left is a couple shots from Anglin Mill Rd. The camera battery had had enough at that point. It was good to get free for a while.

I love that area. We still need to do a lunch ride some day.

When I was on my way to Nottarally I met a couple guys who are planning to build a vintage shop/campground/bike-friendly resort on Oak Hill Road, just West of Independence. They had never heard of 257Bob

Nothing going on this weekend... Thought we had plans but they changed.

Never heard of 257bob? Must be shut-ins.

Hey, Phil.

What I mean is, ride Connor Grove if you can tear yourself away from all the other good stuff in the area.
