Portland to MT and back.

Here are some shots of my ride from Portland, OR to Helena, MT. I'm using this to feel out the bike and camp needs for alaska this summer.

At the farm (Ione, OR - two hrs east of PDX) with my passenger:

At Wallowa Lake campground outside of Joseph, OR:

The view of the mtns:

Yours truly with the XT and Joseph Canyon (I think):

The road between Joseph and Asotin: best damn road I've been on. Ever. Most, tightest curves, almost zero traffic, tons of elevation gain/loss. Ridiculously fun.

We continued along through southern panhandle idaho and lolo pass (too hot to take pics). Lolo pass/idaho panhandle was nice, lots of high speed sweepers, but nothing compared to the stretch between Joseph and Asotin.

The XT performed excellently, averaging 46mpg and 70mph. Doing 80+ on the freeways with a headwind she dropped to about 40mpg. As a prerunner for Alaska in august, I've learned I'll need a few things: a tarp, another cookpot, maybe another tooltube (megatube!) for gas, and a hatchet. Looking forward to hatchet shopping!

More pics to come, depending on the route back.

Nice! If you have time you would be nicely rewarded if you head south over lost trail amd run up the salmon river to Stanley, then take the road to lowman and then Banks.. Then you can go through baker city and central Or.. Yahoo!

Thanks for posting!

+1 on the Rattlesnake road.

So that's what its called! I didn't feel like stopping the ride for shots of the road (plus it was a bazillion degrees w/ gear) so thanks for the pic. Still debating the route back, will take that into consideration.
