Quick Tip: Trucks...

Trucks can be dangerous to hang around. Keep your distance if you can.

Here's my 2 cents:

About a month ago, I was driving on I-81 in Virginia and a truck ahead of me blew a trailer tire. It sounded like a 12 gauge being fired, and chunks flew everywhere. I've had a CDL for about 15 yrs and I've seen a lot of tires let go. This is why I do like the guy in the video says- don't hang out anywhere near a big truck when on the bike. If I'm in the hammer lane behind a line of cars passing a truck, I'll slow down and let the cars go until I have a straight shot past the truck. Some of the flying gators I've seen would take you right off your bike. When i was younger, i would tuck in behind a truck if i was cold for the calmer air. This is extremely dumb and i know better now. Besides the blowouts, shit falls off big trucks all the time. Same with people moving and contractor's pickups. Stay the hell away is my advice.

I had to take a little salt marsh ride off a causeway back in 1982ish to avoid a sheet of plywood that blew out of a contractor's truck. That was one of my earliest riding lessons. So I have spent the last 30 years never riding behind open trucks.

Something reinforced by working in the highway for decades. I have seen all manner of crap fall off trucks. One of my survey crews was almost decapitated by a big rig despite being in a closed lane because a steel beam had shifted a whole lane width off the side.
