I think the top/center gas tank you have mentioned is an air box? Look that that rear tank - its huge, and with a rear sub frame mount (looks like a stock sub frame mount to me - seems flimsy ) so the air box would have to go up front under the seat like the others.

Oh, if its EFI, what are those tassles hanging below the bash plate at the back for?

Maybe a filter for the vent lines to run into.

So those side mounted engine tanks are alloy judging by the welds.

Air filter up where gas tank usually sits.

Is anyone concerned about the EFI?

Even Aliens run carbs

The Aliens will have quicker bikes for sure, wonder what the CRF 450 R top end will be?
At Sardinia rally last year when talking with Cryil about his plan to come to Safari 2011 he said to me his 450RF only topped out at 165kph and he asked me if that was enough, Roland his mechanic also said the same

That makes sense then, I had heard too that "some" of the bikes can do 170 - 175, must have been the BM's?
Don't know if the Honda will, certainly not for Morocco, but you never know what will happen between then and Jan?

And just compare them to the last years 450 Dakarx -

The new one makes last year's look like it was put together in someone's garage - Which I suppose it was
But wow doesn't it make the new one look the part?

The "air box" may be further back, this configuration is the vent set-up to force the airflow (ram air?) - there seems to be a space, say 1/2" under the seat and plastics along the bike to the airbox?

Top speed isn't the determining factor to win rallies, 10km/hr better top speed wont win the Dakar .
the faster the bike ,the less reliable i think, im sure KTM could make their 450 do 180km/h but it would 'nt get to the end ,. They went through that years ago with the 660 ,they could get 190 km/hr out of them ,they didn;'t win the Dakar in those years (Kinnigadner days).

At first I mistook the rear tank breather tubes to be hooks to pull it out of a ditch, like in the WRC !!

I hope not !!

this month's DirtBike Magazine had a small tidbit about honda joining this year's dakar, but the photo they used was the one from the link above... with no comment or description saying the bike in the photo was NOT the bike they were going to be running, but last years'...

this year's bike looks killer - let's hope that it can keep up with F5's (and HRC's) expectations on performance.

100% valid, but I am sure Honda will be looking for both from their Dakar engine?
