It would be interesting if Honda is working on a hybrid engine technology for bikes. Less fuel to be carried early in the stage could be a very interesting advantage. Perhaps offset by the weight of the electrics, but still interesting. No tougher testing ground than Dakar.

Maybe you've hit one of the nails on the head - rally practice, testing and racing is probably the best R&D and testing ground than Honda could ever wish for?

I respectfully hope not. After witnessing the results of a certain japanese company's efforts to turn a world championship into a very expensive R&D session, it might just be mean the death of the smaller teams & privateer efforts.

If HRC want to do R&D they are welcome to test in Baja (or Africa) till hell freezes over

(But I guess the discussion on how to keep the spirit of the Dakar alive is for another thread... )

I can certainly see your point as a true traditionalist and whilst the spirit is and will always be massive and everywhere, the race to the podium has pretty much overtaken that aspect do you not think?

There will be many reasons behind the effort and subsequent justifications in support of it, the principle one probably the ongoing efforts of Roger Harvey and Henk Heligers

As an event though it will always survive on two tiers, one of the few in the whole world of profile sport that can and will - which is one of the many reasons why it is so great

Just passed Erfoud today hoping to see a bright brand new red truck saying HRC. No such luck, just two big tents being set up.
