Ride suggestions for Wyoming/Montana

Hello all,

My father, brother and I are looking to do a ride in Wyoming and Montana this year. We are coming from Atlanta, GA, trailering our bikes to Wyoming and unloading some GS's, ready to adventure We plan on using 4 out of our 12 days to trailer the bikes roundtrip from Georgia to Wyoming, and 8 days to ride 2 wheels. We hope to hit Yellowstone, Glacier National, Jackson Hole, etc.
Any route ideas, sites to see are welcomed.

Thanks,

Kyle

Where are you unloading at? Also, how dirty do you want to get?

Some standard advice is to hit Beartooth, and the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway. The road from Red Lodge to Absorokee and Columbus is a good one as well. If you have a chance to hit eastern Wyoming, the trip from Ranchester to Lovell is worth it.

Most any two-lane is a good ride, or will lead to one. If you don't mind dirt, find national forest and start exploring.

The only problem is getting there and back. We did a similar trip 2 years back from Atlanta to the Grand Canyon, and it was a pain getting there. We felt super rushed and just exhausted from doing 500+ miles a day on interstate to stay on a 2 week timeframe. The only reason we are trailering this time, is to feel rested when we get out there, and be able to take our time and enjoy back roads and scenic highways and stay as far as possible away from the interstate.

Thanks for some of the suggestions so far.

We did this route a couple years ago and had a great time. The Blue Rim goes through the wild horse area and is really remote. Don't try it if it's raining as there's clay that gets really slick. The rewards are great if you happen upon one of the herds. Here's a pic of the wild horses with some wild motorcyclists in the background.

The route between La Barge and Alpine is good forest road with road base and everything. Very scenic and a great way to avoid the Great Divide Basin (always windy)

The route;

Besides the usual suggestions you'll get, check out the Saratoga area in south WY. Nice riding and a bit of different Wyoming for you.

Trailer or not is your call but I'm surprised that you find 500 mile days on a GS tiring. I find 500 mile days with a solid dirt component, on my single w/o a windscreen to be nothing much. Perhaps you guys need to investigate alternative saddles and/or windscreens.

Maybe not necessarily tiring, but I'd like to take more backroads and enjoy the ride rather than hauling ass as cool sites whirl past me on the interstate. There's no way, to my knowledge, that you can do backroads and scenic routes at 500 miles a day. I like to stop, take breaks, get off my bike and take pictures. The math doesn't add up. I don't understand why there is a dick length contest on ADV as to how many miles you need to do in a day. I like to enjoy the ride and not think, well I did 10k miles, how many did you do? Sorry for the rant, I just see it too much on this forum.

I'm using a givi windscreen and airhawk seat. Comfort isn't an issue.

Thanks for your suggestions

We just spent a week in your area and had a blast. However, the hot (104+), boring, featureless, straight roads through NW OK on the way home almost erased the awesome memories of the great time we had in CO. I vowed to truck my bike through there next time. Otherwise, in the summer, you might as well sit on a stool in your riding gear in front of a giant hair dryer for 4 hours for the same enjoyment. We did 600 miles on day one getting to Taos from OKC and the excitement of the trip carried us through with no problem. Not so on the way back.

Go with your plan, Khale. Truck it to the good stuff and make no apologies.

Thanks, that's our intention, and I'm not ashamed to do it.

So it's interesting territory if viewed from behind the windscreen of a truck but boring if viewed from the back of a bike?

I am not badgering you here. I really do not get the whole trailering idea. The OP wrote me that he likes to stop & take two lane roads so he can't make 500 mile days on the GS. How can he stop & take two lane roads at the same pace in a truck but also make 500 mile days? I'm honestly confused by you trailer guys.

Slide, we are hauling ass on the interstate by truck/trailer, unloading the GS's then having fun. I'm not retired like some old folk here, so I only get so much time off work. I like to play and see beautiful scenery, but sometimes it's a drive to get there. To each his own, ride on
