Tub Design Ideas

So I'm thinking one possibility for me to get into hacks on a budget is to buy the Kenna single rolling chassis from DMC for my Sportster (DMC Sporty subframe already ordered) and build my own tub. To hash out a few ideas for proportions and construction techniques, I built a scale model.

Thinking access/egress for the sidecar passenger, you might want to lower the side a little more for the less agile (meaning mum, auntie flo, uncle arthur)
just a thought.

Yes, good idea, thank you! The right and left side panels will likely be asymmetrical. I think I need to see the wheel and fender positioning before deciding how and where to lower the sill of the right side panel.

Nice model you have there.
What material are you considering on using for the tub?
I was thinking that aluminum would be a bit more expensive but lighter considering how you intend to use it.
Using a Sportster for a tug is a good choice.
Excellent torque numbers, especially on the 1200 and will be able to maintain good highway speeds.

I have a spare chassis around here somewhere, I was thinking of building my own sidecar also.
In my search for material types I found this product which you can shape/form with a heat gun, which got me thinking about constructing a frame and "flop moulding" over it with this stuff. http://www.multipanel.com.au/
Larger panels could be formed with a bar heater and some creative shielding. starting at 8mm thick panel, might open a few doors as far as smooth shaping of panels goes.

Be sure to have your potential "monkey" sit in a few different sidecars prior to construction. When we first started looking we took a test ride in a Ural and a BMW w/Ural tub....SWMBO loved it! We then found a used Hannigan Classic bought it and then mounted it.. SWMBO loved it!! Then we found a used Ural sidecar for sale and bought it for another bike. Once we got it home, AFTER buying it, SWMBO sat in it and really didn't like it

. ?????? Turns out that you sit down in the Hanigan and SWMBO really feels protected. By comparison you "sit on" the Ural and the riding experience is much different. When she rode in the two Urals she had nothing to compare them to. I know that there are tons of people that love the Ural riding experience, I just happen not to be married to one. I just thought I'd share this as you are starting from ground zero....I too have a mock up of a Ural style body trying to incorporate the Hannigan demensions...still working on it.....can't let the wonderful Ural frame go to waste!!!!
