The spring gets super hot at that rev level. When the bolt pulled out oil started gushing onto the hot spring. When I saw the smoke I shut her down immediately... No damage except for a few stripped threads. We will fight another day.

I'm actually helping develop new valvetrain parts for all-out race versions of this engine. The rocker arms and adjusters have been a problem. See here what happens to a factory-type adjuster when you get above 7,500 rpm:

The scrubbing of the adjuster on the valve tip creates incredible heat. I broke two valve stems in testing before the heating issue became apparent. The videos above show a new roller tip rocker that eliminates the problem.

This engine will not be flogged hard in real life, though it will be capable of revving in excess of 8,500 rpm comfortably. It's an original Holman-Moody assembly that will rest between the fenders of a '64 Galaxie street car. Maybe an occasional flog to 8,500 rpm, but no racing. I will be able to sleep at night knowing the valvetrain isn't breaking a sweat.

The parts being developed here are going to find their way into all-out drag racing engines that will spin beyond 10,000 rpm in the traps.
