In a Curtis airframe



These are very rare engines today, The owner told me that the term " Dropping a cylinder" came from these. The engines would have entire cylinder and heads fall off in flight

This owner came up with a system to help prevent the cylinders jugs from cracking at the base.

So, is this a common failure in supersized engines ?
