July 31, 2012 Sundance, WY to Rapid City, SD

We left this morning at 6:30 a.m. (attempting to minimize the late afternoon heat). My new GPS power connector setup worked well, the temperature was 67, and all was good.

Our first “tour” was to drive the road through Spearfish Canyon. This is a very nice twisty “motorcycle” road that I hadn’t ridden before, and I really enjoyed it! The turns are pretty much full speed turns with very few requiring a downshift.

After stopping briefly in Deadwood, we proceeded onto the Needles Highway. This road, in contrast to that in Spearfish Canyon, boasts 5 mph and 10 mph curves. If you like that kind of riding, it’s a great road. I don’t mind those curves, but I absolutely prefer the higher speed curves. We stopped several times to take pictures,

and to watch an adventurous RV driver take his vehicle through a one-way tunnel.

I’m not sure whether he was brave or dumb!

We followed the Needle Highway with Iron Mountain Road.

We stopped for lunch at the State Game Lodge which had served as the 1927 Summer White House for President Calvin Coolidge. The lodge offered a GREAT buffet lunch menu – easily the best meal of the trip!

We then went looking for wild animals. We saw buffalo,

wild donkeys

and several species of deer.

Dan’s wife, Janet, flies back to Tennessee tomorrow so that she can get back to her nursing position. The remaining three guys will spend some time in the Badlands before proceeding on to tomorrow night’s stop.

We left this morning at 7:00 a.m. and dropped Janet off at the airport. We three guys continued without the benefit of female companionship!

Our first (and only) stop was at the Badlands National Park.

The mid-morning sun was not particularly conducive to taking pictures, but we stopped several times to try to capture the beauty of this stark environment.

At the visitor center, near the exit of the Badlands, we encountered a paleontological dig. In May, 2010, a 7-year-old girl discovered a very rare fossil in pristine condition. (http://blog.southdakota.com/girl-dis...n-badlands.htm) (http://www.nps.gov/badl/photosmultim...ossil-find.htm) Scientists are now engaged in a 3-year project to uncover fossils on this particular little hill. There is a paleontological laboratory on site in the visitor center where one can watch scientists using a dental drill, removing rock and debris from the fossils that are found.

When we left the Badlands, the temperature had climbed to nearly 100 degrees. Our journey to Valentine, NE was lengthened by nearly 20 miles of road construction. We had to ride off-road on soft dirt for several miles – with our big touring bikes. We did it, but not happily!

A few hours after we checked into our motel at Valentine, NE, a FIERCE windstorm arose! Last time Dan was at this exact same motel, something similar happened and his bike was blown over onto its side! It wasn’t that bad today, but it sure got our attention!

Today was the last day that we have National Park visits scheduled. For the next few days we’ll be concentrating on getting home. It’s been fun!

Today was a travel day. We left at 6:30 a.m. and rode about 400 miles in temperatures ranging from 63 to 93 degrees. We arrived in Ames early enough for me to go to Walmart and get a couple of prescriptions refilled, and for Ron to go to a Yamaha dealer and get a new battery for his Gold Wing.

As usual, the Harley continues to perform with utmost reliabity. Dan had been concerned about an abnormal sound he consistently heard at about 1300 rpm. He had noticed this sound for the past several days. However, he has now determined that this sound was caused by a tube of chapstick rattling around in a hard plastic case! Thank God for Harley's! You can always count on them ... to leak oil! Yep! It's coming out of the air filter! If this were computer software, one might refer to this not as a "bug" but as an "undocumented feature". So who knows - perhaps oil coming out of the air filter is an innovation slated for future release in the Harley world!!

Today was pretty warm (note the understatement!) and we did a lot of higher speed riding on the Interstate. No attractions, no photos!!

This was our final day of travel before returning to our starting point. We rode a lot of back roads today, and skirted rain all day. We crossed the Ohio River at Cave-in-Rock, IL on a ferry.

The total loop covered 8,658.4 miles. And you can add two days and 800 more miles for me to get to and from the starting point.
