More BC (Chilcotin) Questions

I am planning my route in the Chilcotin area for this years ride (aggressive 9-12 days starting Labor Day) from Seattle through Harrison Lake and up to Bella Coola ( and as much new country in between that I have never seen) ... as always, as much dirt as possible.

One of the areas I plan to go is the Empire Valley (Churn Creek).

In pouring over my maps (google) I see Brown Lake, Roaster Lake, Black Dome Mountain and some kind of big mining operation back there.

I don't see any ride reports out that way... perhaps for good reason. I will do so ... If I can get out there

I was looking for some intel:

1)
I was told that Black Dome is a cool place, but it doesn't look like a road goes to the top. (Is it accessible? or do I need to bring my hiking shoes?) If there is a road, is it doable on a big GS?

2)
It looks like the road ends at the Empire Valley Ranch past Brown Lake.
Can I ride to Empire Valley Ranch (is it private.. or would a DS rider be welcome?) I don't; want to get shot at... or fined.

3)
Good places to camp. Roaster Lake? Other places...

4)
Can I ride to the pit mine out there (Black Dome Gold Mine?!?!). It looks like a huge operation. With roads coming to it from the other end. It is passable.. locked? Private? Is it possible to ride through instead of backtracking.

Any info appreciated. Looks like great country to explore...

Just found this link about a report into Black Dome.

Makes me want to go more. Maybe not on my big GS though....

Randaroo on DSBC may have some knowledge. Last time we were though there he said he knew a guy that banged his way around Yodel cabin rd and it aparently is a non starter or a sufferfest on a small bike at the least.

Yes, that looks like Churn hill and last time I rode it on the F800 I made it but it scared the shit out of me..

Yalokum up over Poison Mtn to 2800 rd is great ride. and way to get to the Bella Coola Rd without hitting the Fraser

Been looking at that route to Poison Mtn for awhile. Not a big dually friendly route. Might have to think about taking my Dakar and less gear ... Maybe give up on it until I get a smaller dirt bike.

Looks like it is a hike up to Black Dome. Not too bad. I was told the Black Dome Gold Mine is all gated and hard to get to.

Still doing research...

Thanks

Poison on f800 is no problem with good tires and high 'C' low 'B' skill level

1200 with solid rider could do it, crux is descent off poison

My buddy was a Cowboy (yes they still exist) for the Empire and Gang ranches.
He told me that you do not want to be anywhere in there if it RAINS!
The roads turn to Gumbo, that even the horses cant get through.
So check your weather.
It is not much fun trying to ride down a road with your legs in outrigger position as you listen to that Flap, Flap, of big mud pelts coming off your tires, and the final Splat as your fenders fill up and sieze your tires...
Cheers

Ditto that, Randaroo told me tales of moto couple that got stuck on branch 2800 in the rain, dropping and picking up bikes was a laurel and hardy slapstick routine, something they werent laughing about at the time

Exactly what the locals have told me. It is tough with 4x4s in wet. I am going at the end of August. Hopefully the roads will be all dry and all fallen trees will be cleared. I was wanred not to go back there alone like I normally do

We may be going through around that time, I don't think the GS 1200 would be a good choice for those tracks, but your Dakar would be fine..
