Racing an '81 Can Am Qualifier 400

I had so much fun racing the '86 Suzuki SP at the Baja Rally, that I pulled my dad's '81 Can Am out for a TCCRA vintage race.

Here is a quick recap of some of the good times!

Great bike. I hand made a 125 Qualifier. Bought a 76 250 MX, sold engine, added qualifier tank, air cleaner box, & fenders. Bought a 125 TNT, put engine in new qualifier and sold old TNT frame. That was by far the best 125 Enduro bike of its time. Won Western Regional Enduro championship in 79.

WOW! Did you do all of that in the seventies or more recently just to get the bike rolling?

Did it in the year the AMA added 125 Enduro class in 78 raced it in 79 sold it in 81. Jap 3 had nothing to offer in 125, rotor valve engine had tons wider torque range that Husky using the over the counter "grand prix" rotor. With wide ratio (TNT) transmission it would smoke trails in 2nd & 3rd and still do 70 MPH on roads to catch up. With close ratio (MX) transmission it was great in deep sand of the desert, always had just the right gear.
