Was just wondering.. How will you get to work, when you live in the middle of nowhere, and the roads are are covered in snow?
I take it the gov won't come to clear forest paths..
Sooo.. walk to the nearest main road?

LOL, nah, saving up for a little car. I only have about 5 minutes of forest road, the rest is paved and cleared in the winter.

A special thank you to Bennett L for the unexpected present in my Paypal account!
I might have found a car, a Toyota Corolla, the cool thing is that she'll take $700 now and I can make payments on the other $500. So far I have $300 and my mom just gave me another $100. So your surprise was just great! Pretty soon I'll have a car as it actually froze last might, down to 25 degrees!!

Without a block heater*... (or the power to run one), the car will probably not start in the coldest weather.
Engine oil becomes so dense... won't allow the engine to turn over... (etc)
What does the owner say?

* a block heater typically uses electricity to keep the engine (er) 'warm' to allow starts in very cold weather.

Valid point. Many cars up there need 3 plug-ins, a block heater for the oil, a circulating water heater for the coolant, and a battery blanket that wraps around the car battery. Yeah, gonna be interesting if there isn't any electricity.

How far will you be from work? I know people up there who ride there bicycles with studded tires in the winters. Yeah, it's often 40-60 below 0f but remember, it's a dry cold. I've been riding my bicycle to work daily for many winters, but I live down here in Anchorage where it's a bit warmer. I actually felt colder in Tallahassee FL one winter than I ever did in my few years of college in Fairbanks. Crazy, I know.

Good luck and have fun, Mark H.

We had a Toyota and with 0-30 synthetic oil and a good battery it would start after sitting overnight in -40 .

Get some sort of tarp (a surplus parachute works great) to cover the car at night and it will start.

Just saw a car locally with Alaska plates. Had the heater plug hanging out of the front bumper. Thought of you.....good luck this winter.
