Thanks Perry

Troy or Fish? Having a fire is nice but those "slot camp spots" takes away from the "primitive" feel. It's your guys' call.

I picked up a portable toilet at WallyWorld for 30 bucks . . . used it my last 2 trips up to KM and it works great. I don't even have to leave the van! Just drop a duece, set the toilet outside, and go back to sleep. They have the flushable type too, I thought dealing with the water and having to clean it when I got home would be a PITA, so I just went with the bag version which is simple, quick, and clean. Last year the outhouse in Troy Overflow was so full the mound of $hit was just inches under your ass . . . $hitting in the van on my WallyWorld special was like the 4 Seasons after that!!!

I assume you're asking for emergency preparedness, not for social reason.

No cell coverage up there. If you rode/drove out to Chimney peak area to the top of nine-mile canyon road you might get a signal from Ridgecrest. Even at the look out on Bald Mt. you can get bars but calls won't go through, it's too far. Bald Mt. does have a land line or internet I believe. You might find a ranger at Blackrock.

And with the ranger station closed it is hard to summon help. You just have to plan to be self sufficient. Have spares and tools and be prepared to spend the night trailside if necessary. Carry water and emergency food. It can be a long hike out from some of the trails. Rattlesnake Creek trail goes out 15 miles with no other way to get back other than ride back out. If you break out near the end it's a day's walk out. On a busy weekend there are plenty of riders out, but if you break late in the day and everybody has headed back to camp you could be left on your own. For this reason alone, never ride solo out there.
