Laugh Trans Am Trail --Tennessee?

Anybody interested in riding the TN portion of the Trans Am Trail in mid to
late June or July. I have the maps and GPS....never tried riding, navigating, GPSing at same time...should be quite the show! Join me...it'll be worth the price of admission.

I can camp or hotel it....Not sure how far we can go in a weekend. Trail starts in Sparta and zig/zags toward SW part of the state....425 miles.

What the hell.

There's a chance that some of the NJ Dirt Brigade might team up with some of the New England guys and do the TN portion of the TAT. I'll see if they're interested.

Red Z,

I might be interested in joining the ride. I did the Missisippi Hill Country spur trail in March. I found it very helpful to use the roll chart info and program the waypoints and a route on the GPS before the trip. It saved a ton of time on the ride, and let me work thru some glitches in the route before leaving instead of wandering around trying to find the roads.

How many days are you planning? I'm somewhat limited on time off from work because of some other big trips this year. Are you going to do an out-and-back ride on the trail? Or return via pavement?

I'll watch this thread and see what you get planned.

____________

leeo45, . Right now looking like July 15, 16, 17.
Hope to ride out around lunch or mid afternoon on Friday 15th. Head home from
where ever I am Sunday mid morning. I'll bookmark GPS wherever I am on Sunday and pick up the TAT later this fall.

I'm open to any input or advice....esp from anybody that has ridden this portion
of TAT.

I'd be very interested in joining you. I was just checking the web site on the TN portion just yesterday! I've never had the pleasure of trying it, and its so close to home! Now I'm itching to try! I'll keep watching this tread for more info and dates.

Red Z, Those dates should work for me. It'll be hot, tho. Did Sam give you any idea about the type of roads or trails to expect in Tennessee?

I would be up for the ride. My wife is currently working weekends, so I have kid duty, but with a little advance notice I can make plans to ride. Where were you planning to start? Sparta I assume? Camping is cheap, I like cheap. Is the trail BMW GS or KTM Adventure?

HiJack on:
BTW, I live in middle TN any fellow adv riders interested in riding, PM me and lets try to plan some rides. I have a BMW GS and KTM Adventure, so I'm flexible on the type of riding I can do. HiJack off:

A lot of the TN stuff has been chipsealed, but there's still some fun dirt roads. There are a few water crossings just south of Waynesboro that you need to be careful on.

It's a fun ride. Bite the bullet and cross Mississippi before riding home.

I'm about 15 miles from the TA trail near Savanna, TN. I'd be happy to ride with you guys on some or all of it.

A little taste of middle MS:

Heck, If that is the case, I will take a few more days off and go on down into MS. Anybody else game? Kinda sounds like you could make it through TN in 1.5 days or less. I guess I'm going to have to get the maps.

The more I think about it, count me in I'm definitely going.

Gaspipe, you interested in doing some/all of the MS section?

I think I will take the KTM, I can't carry much because I don't have any bags, but it will be warm so I shouldn't need much to camp.

I'm ready to go ride.

Hot in July? Yeah, we'll probably sweat our asses off. July 15, 16, 17 are looking more firm as this will be when wife and family are in FL on their vacation--- the only time I have over the summer to take off. Friday July 15 will be my depart date and I hope to firm up a departure time in next few weeks.....but will likely be after noon. Walmart in Sparta will be the gas up and start point since the trail begins within a mile or two from there.

leeo45,
I've heard the TN portion has a mix of dirt, graded, and some black top.I have no idea on the overall terrain and what bike would work best.
I'm on KLR but have choice of rear tire change if me thinks it's going to be
sloppy. I'll EM Sam C and try to get more details...then post.

gaspipe,
Yes, heard about a few potentially slippery water crossings....I'll slip into my fins and snorkel before crossing.

GMM,
Yep, the cheaper the better. Although I have no idea where and when to camp along the trail.....Me and my bottle of Jack are not too particular.

The dates for the TAT are cool with me. I know where the Wal-mart in Sparta is, or I could meet you in Smithville also because I will be going through there on my way to Sparta. Just let me know what time you want to meet.

I'm in LaVergne, I will check my schedule (kids have alot of activities in June) for a date in June. BSF is cool. I have been up there with a bicycle, but not on a motorcycle. I have been thinking about exploring that area. I will get back with you.
