Military rider crashed today

Responded today to a motorcycle vs car. Upon arrival I found a young man laying in the middle of the road. While assessing him for major injuries, he tells me he is in the Air Force and was on a trip from Tacoma, WA to Key West and back home, when the Douche Bag made a left turn in front of him. Young man decided to lay his bike over instead of t-boning the car and risking serious injury or death. After looking at the bike its trashed, and will not be riden anywhere. As for the douche bag, he only wanted to know who was going to pay to have his car fixed... Then FHP Trooper told him he had bigger problems than his car getting fixed. STROKED with a nice big ticket or three.

Had to lay her down?

Sucks to hear about accidents, but it sounds like it was a matter of time before this guy went down...

Having the time to initiate a slide means there was possibly time to brake heavily, and/or avoidance swerve.

Hope the rider heals quickly and fully.

Sometimes the left turner will see you, stop, then start going again in the direction of your "avoidance swerve."
Ask me how I know.

"Had to lay it down" usually translates to "I grabbed all available brakes, locked the tires and fell!"
It is an outcome, not a choice.

I was assuming the other, usual explanation.

Bullshit. Is your entire world so black and white or just your computer monitor?

Hope the rider heals up and the cage pays through the nose he can't see past.

my computer monitor is not black and white, and if you look at the core issues, usually the answers are black and white.

The guy freaked out when he saw the car, adrenaline pumped, grabbed front brake (as mentioned before), and he went down. He then probably tried to avoid having his ego bruised so he made it sound like he "intentionally" laid it down. any girl with a thing for military guys and inexperience for motorcycles will have her heart melt when he explains his brave maneuvering skills.

once your bike lays down, you no longer have steering, you only go forward. Also, your bike comes to a stop quicker with the brakes and the tires NOT locked up, than metal parts, skin, and jacket sliding across the pavement. Laying it down has no benefit.

It's ok to freak out and mistakes will happen. some of us will grab the front brake and go down... but "having" to lay her down. that is ignorant.

At least he did not climb on top and surf to a stop.

ABS can save a lot of people. I know I will brake much closer to the threshold with it.

actually just saw an instance were the rider 'had to lay it down'.

In one of the best movies ever made (Exit Wounds with DMX and Steven Seagal) our man Steven is evading the baddies on his stolen Monster and lays it down to avoid being decapitated by a truck's lift gate...sorry cant find a youtube link!

so if you are being chased down a wet alley with a couple of guys shooting at you, and a truck backs out of a side alley with its gate down-----its time to lay it down!

Its not an insult, just an assumption.

We've all screwed up once or twice.

There are times when laying it down is the best if not only option.

I've been in one of those instances.

Years ago I was on my old CB650 headed to work. On a 4 lane divided highway. I'm in the fast lane cars all around (morning rush hour). Idiot cager in the next lane all of a sudden decides he'd rather occupy my lane. Forcing my off the road down a small embankment, all wet grass. Speed was 55-60 MPH. Now here I am going 55-60 MPH on wet grass with a a CONCRETE culvert that drops about 30+ feet down. I have maybe 50 feet to stop a bike doing 55-60 MPH on wet grass: NOT GONNA HAPPEN So instead of riding the bike over a 30+ foot drop into a concrete culvert I decided I'd take my chances doing some "grass surfing"

BTW - bike was totaled. And I ended up with a torn MCL. Idiot cager, never even stopped. Luckily a witness saw the whole thing and was nice enough to call SAPD and provide a tag number and description.
