Do you have a good powdercoating shop in your area ?
I use a Methylene Chloride vat to strip the factory finish then media blast and powder with a color basecoat then a clear powder topcoat. If you strip them to bare aluminum and then clear powder, you won't be happy with the finish. Clear powder over bare aluminum darkens the color significantly. Better to use a silver base then clear top. Your local guy will know all of this if he's any good. |

Ok, I was thinking of just stripping them, and clear coat, I know this is a cheap way, but since I am doing everything top notch, I should probably go that route, I have them nearly stripped by hand
![]() , that's me scrubbing them , Oh BTW I just put new seals

Are you after a polished bare aluminum look ? I can get them nearly chrome like with just hand polishing and elbow grease if you put the effort into them.
Its all in the process and right products. You dont even coat them with anything afterwards.

If its the RD they have a clear coat like most Japanese forks of that period.
It breaks down and you get oxidized spots same on the engine side covers where used. Try 0000 steel wool and soapy (car wash is good) water.

I brought mine back to a very good shine. I just ran them over a wire wheel. A bench type one not one thats on an angle grinder. Then polished them with a buffing wheel. After that I just clear coated them.

All it takes is a little time and effort.
No need for media blasting, power tools, powdercoatings or special preservers. Just some patience and effort to go through the steps thouroughly. ![]()
