To beak, or not to beak

Well, the accessorizing continues.

I received today from Nippy Norman's my Touratech Rear Luggage Grid and Front Fender Beak.

The rear rack is pretty much what I expected it to be, but the front fender beak leaves me a little sick in the stomach.

First the quality of this piece was pretty bad. I realize that the underside isn't seen, but they could have done a better job of finishing. I had a bitch of a time getting the front mounting screws started; the holes were full of plastic. Plus, the photocopy or the photocopy of the photocopy of the instructions were understandable difficult to discern. So when I did finally manage to get the mount installed, it was upside downside.

Anyway, beyond the quality of the product, I do like the look of the product on the bike. The question is do these looks merit drilling two hole in an otherwise perfectly fine front fender?

Is this http://www.touratech-usa.com/Store/2...MW-F650GS-Twin the part? Is it different than the BMW parts below:
46617683060 EXTENSION FOR WHEEL COVER 0.41
06327657966 FILLISTER HEAD SCREW - M5X20SI
07119904214 WASHER
07119902745 NUT - M5
which are way cheaper -- about $50 total. I'm asking because I keep thinking of adding it to my F650 to improve the looks of the silly beak!

Which is cheaper? Anyway, to answer your questions, yes, what I bought was the Touratech version.

By the way, I think Touratech is the supplier to BMW. I haven't closely inspected an F800GS to compare. But I think the two are identical, except for the Touratech logo on one and the BMW part number on the other.

I hope this helps.

P.S. I just looked on Max BMW fiche. and you're correct the BMW parts are substantially cheaper! This is very odd. But I think I will return the Touratech thing and buy BMW instead.

I believe that the BMW parts fit on the F650 Twin -- but I'd double check with BMW before I bought it. It's really odd that the factory stuff is cheaper!! Just noticed that Sierra BMW lists it for the F650 so it looks like a fit with 2 screws and two holes to drill in the plastic. http://www.sierrabmwonline.com/produ...-preset-p-1111

Just buy the bmw beak that comes on the f800gs. Its cheap and fits perfect. The touratech is a bit longer I believe.

BMW front fender beak

Per everyone's suggestions, I ordered my front fender beak from Sierra BMW. A third the price of the Touratech model. Hopefully better quality too. Also added to my order an Aeroflow headlight cover.

Will post pictures when installed.

Beak installed

Here is a picture of the BMW beak installed on my F650GS.

A much more robust (big) beak than that from Touratech; I like it much better and it installed much easier.

Also pictured is the Aeroflow headlight cover (HLC) -- a simple but effective protective device.

Nearly complete...

Well, the BMW beak is on!

As well, I returned the Scottoiler and with the money bought a black seat, and from Wunderlich a side stand foot enlarger, cruise control and 16-tooth front gear:

The only thing I'm thinking of now is switching to a tapered handlebar and new clamps.

Nice bike! Btw, what do you gain by swapping to a tapered handlebar and new clamps?
