Wednesday Day 3

Got a little side tracked there.

Back to it, on the trail leaving Clear Creek C.G., my favorite day so far and one of the best of the trip. The big bikes split from us based on the intel that "steep and rocky" conditions are ahead. Turned out to be a wise move, no way I would have wanted to do that part of the trail on a big bike, a better rider could do it but I don't see the fun in it.

I had another "first" today, I saw Elk. Unfortunately I was 3rd in line so by the time I got to see them they were already on the move and I couldn't get a photo, this was this first of many wildlife sightings.

One of the few regrets I have on this trip is we took no photos of the technical stuff. Hopefully that at least gives you an idea of how tough it was. Once we were in it no one even that about their cameras. I did take this of the guys once we got through taking a break.

After we got through the steep stuff the roads got faster but we were constantly running up on deep sandy sections.

On the way through the sandy section we run into some mountain bikers. They tell us they're involved in a race down the entire length of the Continental Divide. Talk about putting things into perspective, we're pretty proud of ourselves riding motorcycles with damn near every convenience of home strapped to them and here are these kids pedaling thousands of mile carrying not much more than a couple liters of water.

We met back up with Jack, Bob, and Bill in Abiquiu NM. After a quick lunch we decide to split again and meet at Spectacle Lake C.G. in Colorado. Yes Colorado! I'm thinking no more heat, no more sand, and were heading up into the mountains.

Once up in the mountains we run into more rocky ascents and descents, not the boulder strewn hill climbs we had in the morning but fun you just have to pick a line and work your way through. We got our highest elevation at this point, 10900ft.

At this point I did what any good husband would do, I called my wife. There were so many times I wish she was with me to see the things I was seeing for the first time. Oh well there's always the next time.

It was pretty much all fun and games until we got caught in a thunderstorm while on top of the mountain. The rocky slopes quickly turned to slick, rocky slopes. Vision was terrible, lightening and thunder right on top of us, it was getting late, and things were getting muddy quick. There were times I thought we would be camping there on top of the mountain.

We finally make it to Spectacle Lake where the other guys are already set up. We set up our already wet tents and hang Scott's tarp and we stay under it trying to stay dry. Long day but ten hours of incredible dual sport riding. I could have stayed there longer and just re-ride what we did today.
Good times but it's Wednesday evening but I'm out of clean clothes and I haven't had a shower since Monday morning.

Seem Jack has an issue with his motorcycle key so he was given this REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT key chain.

Glad they found their way to you this time Ryan. Don't forget to post pics of you and Faith's bike sporting those stickers in the Cat Herder thread.

Man I don't where you stayed but the one down from Bruno's restaurant seemed decent if you didn't care about not having a/c the other two smelled like they were storing bodies under the beds.

Thanks for the encouragement everybody. Since this is my first attempt at a real ride report it does help, although I'm really enjoying reliving this trip.

i know what you mean about rain on those roads. it rained hard every day i was in colorado last year and it wasn't even supposed to be the monsoon season. also know about no photos on some of those rocky climbs and descents, survival mode, forget the damn camera.

great report.

jdrocks, you're an inspiration to a lot of people, if you were in survival mode imagine how the rest of us felt.

Thursday Day 4

We get up early and pack our stuff wet again.

We have spent the last three nights huddled under Scott's tarp hiding from the rain. Jack is real excited to wake up to sunshine.

We head out, the group is all together today and we go through several passes, the last one being Indiana Pass. Absolutely beautiful riding.

Coming through Indiana Pass we could see we were headed into yet another storm. But this one would be different and give us another lesson on how quickly things can turn ugly in such a beautiful place.

Between photo stops and breaks the group had gotten fairly strung out. I was in the back with Patrick and Bob. As we headed down the mountain it quickly got dark and the wind was whipping up. Suddenly we were getting hammered by hail. I've seen hail a few times and it's always been short lived. This was not short lived, it picked up in intensity and the size of the hail got bigger. The road was quickly covered in hail and started accumulating. The bigger the hail got the worse it hurt, there was no place to take cover all you could do is try to carefully ride through it and try not to think how bad it hurt. The fact that there was no cover and we didn't know how large the hail would get was down right scary. I've never been in a situation like that and hope to never be again. Once we finally got through it Bob said his bike thermometer read 44 degree in the middle of the storm. We knocked out the rest of the miles and arrived in Del Norte absolutely chilled to the bone and ice still on the bikes. Here's the ice left on Scott's bike in Del Norte

My stones are bigger than Scott's but I didn't get a picture.
