After the hailstorm debacle we ate a hot lunch, drank much coffee and the group decided to high tail to Salida and stay in a hotel. Scotty was so shook up by the hailstorm that one of the first things he did was wrap his hand around a Keystone Light.

Steve, I wish one of us could have gotten pic of it, Bill may have gotten some video, hopefully he did and will post it up. We should have taken some pics of the bruises left behind from the hail. OUCH!

Friday Day 5
We leave Salida and I've got condensation on the inside of the screen of my Garmin 60csx, it won't get a satellite fix, and the buttons aren't working. Bob recommends putting the unit in a bag of rice. Thanks Bob! It took three days but it saved my GPS. Another day of riding beautiful passes.

Bob making his way to the gas stop in Hartsel CO.
![]() I've got a story to tell on myself about the gas stop in Hartsel. Whenever I'm riding with a group I really don't want to be "that guy" everyone is waiting on. After gassing up and moving my bike out of the way I gear up and mount the bike. I notice several of the guys are still a few minutes away from being ready. I'm sitting there bored and that's when the 12 year old boy in me I mentioned earlier noticed the red kill switch on the bars. Now I never use that button, I always use the key. But for some reason the boy inside me just had to push that button. About that time I hear bikes fire up and everyone is ready so I push the button so it will pop back out to the run position but it is stuck and won't pop back out. ![]() After several seconds that seemed like minutes of frantic tapping and banging it finally popped out the bike fired and I was on my way...........................Dumbass

I hate those kill buttons. I can't tell you how many times I've come across a rider in a dualsport event on something like a Honda XR650L and his bike won't start after it crashed. Yep, the button got pushed in the get-off, and the rider didn't notice it.

I missed one thing earlier. After we spent the night in Salida Pomo had to break off and start making his way back to Socorro NM.
![]() Great time riding with you Patrick, I hope everything works out for you in your new location. Now get out there and meet some girls.

Amazeing trip thread . The pictures were incredible. I'm going to have to add this one to my bucket list. Kevin , if you could have taken another dual sport would you still still have taken the DR ?

Absolutely, the DR seemed like a perfect bike for the CDR. It was small enough to keep the technical parts fun and it was able to keep up on the highways fine. I would not have done it with the stock DR suspension though.
