Bogota!

Spending the day wandering around the Candeleria district or old city we strolled its narrow cobbled streets and into the Plaza del Chorro de Quevedo, which is the historic center of the city. The rest of the downtown area of Bogota has a Soviet era feel to the buildings.

In many public spaces they have these police kiosks. On the streets there are many police, especially at night. They have walking police patrols with huge muzzled dogs.

You're in South America!

Friends that have done this trip say you go through Central America to get TO South American, meaning South America is their favorite. Really looking forward to hearing about your experiences and seeing your pics.

Well so far I would agree. Epic ride today thru the mountains with amazing roads and scenery. The people in this country have been universally super friendly, gracious, and helpful. The best today was finding that motos go free thru the tolls as long as they fit thru the far right and sometimes very narrow lane. It can be a bit sketch for LULU as the curb/barrier on each side of the lane can be quite tall and I could clang my very low panniers. No issues so far though.

We are off to the north east coast near Venezuela.

walking around Bogota Candelaria area 2

The Botero Museum is also located in the Candelaria area, and houses part of the private collection of the most “Colombian of Colombian artists Fernando Botero Angulo. His works feature a figurative style, called by some "Boterismo", which gives them an unmistakable flair. His art is a stunning to see and the exhibit includes paintings and sculpture housed in a restored old building with wood floors, fountains, courtyards, and free admission.

I've lived in downtown Bogotá for the last year and a half and haven't seen a lot of the details you guys captured with your lens. I think I need to walk around slower...

Have fun in Villa de Leyva!!

Your city and country are stunning. The people are so friendly! There is NO TRASH on the ground! Motos go free on the tolls! This may be heaven.

Hugs to Paola!

Artist Botero

I'm guessing the artist has met Rosie O'Donnell.

So glad to finally meet you two in person. We are loving it in Barichara after an epic days ride. Food here almost as good as Ellen's.

All that glitters IS Gold

The Gold Museum or Museo del Oro displays the world’s largest selection of its pre-Hispanic gold work. It is well with the 3000$ pesos or 1.60 USD entry. The displays have English descriptions that describe the objects as well as the intricate processed by which they were made. You do not go to too many museums where the doors to the galleries are vaults.

Bogota is a very cosmopolitan and lively city. Our hosts Salvador and Paola took us out on the town to a 6- story bar/ restaurant. This place was packed on all levels and decorated in a very kitsch style. They give you VIP crowns and welcome to Colombia sashes. Even the beers come with decorations. When you leave they give you a grab bag full of different sweets.

Epic ride

Salvador

We had an epic 9 hour ride yesterday, riding down the switchback gravel to the valley floor and up the other side to Galan, La Fuente, Zapotoca, Mesa Los Santos, and back to Barichara via Bucaramanga. Pics and video to follow!

The following day was Friday when we were supposed to pick up the bikes shipped the day before. We had half expected the news when we phoned Girag and were told that the bikes were not shipped as promised. Luckily for us Salvador was even more distressed than we were, because he immediately launched a campaign of phone calls all day until he was assured they would be sent on the next Girag flight on Saturday.

Without the trip to the airport today we decided to walk north in the city to the National Museum. On the way we found several delicious snacks.
