That is what I always use. It fits in my tent bag just fine.

I do tend to lend it out a lot at rallies!

I've got this one... http://www.gerbergear.com/Hunting/Ge...xe-II_22-41420
They updated it since most of the reviews to have a keeper on the saw. It takes no space in my boxes because it fills a dead spot that i had anyhow. I like the saw better than the knife, I already carry a knife...

Ebay has them about 1/2 price of msrp.

Makes a decent defense tool as well.

Couldn't help myself on this one! Is this a trick question!!!

Uh, a rock perhaps... duh.... carrying anything else in my opinion is like bringing fine china to a redneck picnic (though, thankfully I have never been to one, redneck picnic that is, and do not plan on attending one anytime soon!!!)... and if you find a good one, you can take it with you (the rock that is).....

Redneck picnics are the absolute best! Kool-aid/5-Alive and some grain alcohol is an awesome drink

You should plan on going to a redneck picnic. You don't know what you're missing... If you do decide to go though, leave the fine china at home.

I carry an Eastwing hatchet that was my grandfather's. It's never failed to split kindling, drive in a tent stake, or keep bears from entering my tent.

Thanks for all the ideas. The updated gerber Hatchet with the saw looks like the best option given it's multiple uses.

Okay okay, sorry for that one, was a little buzzed last night when I posted. Maybe when I get back from my western hemisphere ride I may get out that way. I know my friend lived in South Carolina and she loved it back there. Another ride in the making perhaps.... I'll bring the red solo cups and dixie plates

Cheap, effective, disposable. They are like 4 dollars for only the finest of chinese rubbers.

I suppose if you wanted to go high tech you could use a plastic mallet.

It's not so much the weight, but the size that is annoying! I'm looking forward to whatever expensive, hard to fine, tent stake ramming contraptions other inmates come up with. So I can buy them.
IMO If the tool doesn`t have at least 2 alternative uses, its stays at home.
An axe is better than a hammer, but both are luxuries, and not a necessity so where possible I`ll leave whatever I can at home and use my boots to push tent pegs in

This thread inspires me to buy a hatchet. I have an old Estwing rock hammer, that you can barely tell what brand it is if it were not for the leather 'washer' handle. I think the Estwing hatchet looks really cool...

I have the smaller gerber hatchet kit with the knife. Of course mine packs smaller but the longer handle on your rig makes slashing and cutting superior and sometimes a saw works much better anyway.

The small hatchet works great for stake pounding and trimming but cutting is more of a problem if you can not buy firewood. I found that sometimes there are no rocks so I purchased the hatchet/knife in the first place but I most likely would get the saw rig now.

Smile Dammit!

You got a Kermit Chair with legs, a fire ring, Scotch in a Glass, no reason to not smile. Unless that's your Buddy's Kermit and he is trying to make you get up.

Oh yea, I use the plastic mallet. It weighs next to nothing and packs in my bag nicely. The plastic mallet is very popular with the rock guys when the ground is really hard.

I support Estwing 100%...one of the few major tool companies still making their products in America. And their shit is rock solid. My dad has had his Estwing 22oz hammer for 30-40 years, remodeling many houses with it.
