MEMORIAL DAY (weekend) 2013 NORTH RIM RIDE

day 1: mesquite (nevada) to toroweap (grand canyon national park)

8am meeting at smith's in mesquite

gas prices in mesquite

we took the easier route - limekiln canyon instead of elbow canyon (read last year's rr)

conteacher

this place is smooth as opposed 3 years ago when tidybowl, lior, madmax and i rode it

the other john

todd even brought the kitchen sink

obligatory self photo

big bikes rule the plains

not sand but silt, and miles of it

if you missed last year's rr....you'll find it here

then more silt

we finally made it where limekiln and elbow intersect

then south on cr5 towards mt. trumbull

approaching mt. trumbull school house...http://www.blm.gov/az/st/en/prog/cul...hoolhouse.html

the boys are back in school

coed out house

getting ready for the next stop - bar 10

more coming!

built for adventure

this time, we were on time for lunch

todd making sure i'm still with them

here's the proof boys

memorial weekend tribute to the flag

petting time

the other big dogs

for $30, you get to enjoy the facility

the facility use fee includes lunch...

lunch was laced with napping pills

You guys do some awesome rides, but I tend to avoid the desert between late April and Oct, even though I've lived in Fresno over 50 years. Just sompin about all day in the dry heat for the whole weekend...can't stay hydrated even with the Camelback

same here in socal, we avoid the desert during the hot summer months. thankfully, there are places within 1 - 2 hour drive that we can ride at higher elevation 5-9k feet where the weather is a lot more comfortable.

from 2 weeks ago

and 3 weeks ago

later on this RR, we reached the tree line and everything was green...

back at bar 10, john in a dilemma on how to fix his left side pannier mount (bar 10 has no welding)

at the nearby fuel depot, we topped off (87 octane only @ $7/gal). check out conteacher's vario side case turned to a top case.

todd and i riding towards toroweap

oh yeah, the familiar landscape

good thing we reserved this site. the toroweap campground was full.

the finest outhouse in the world

the grand colorado river

bill you got to get closer to get the best view

i was unnerving to take these shots

bill and todd

walking back to camp

making dinner

no ipad, no tv, no internet, no cell service...watching the moon is all that is left

the riding from mesquite - limekiln - bar 10 - colorado river overlook - toroweap was drama free. lots of grounds with varying terrains were covered in one day. no crash, no flats --- it was a good day!

scub, love to have you on future rides. yeah, trying to get as much riding as i can before it gets too hot to ride. opportunities don't wait.

all i show are the easy ones, no pics of the tough and challenging roads. i have to focus on my riding, nor want to stop on an uphill. of course having all the camping gear, extra 2 gals of fuel, food and gal of water weighs down the rear making the front end very light and less control.

hang in there and we'll plan a riding therapy.

some hungry and smart critters got my flat bread

riding on the moon surface and the aliens are at home

the ride out of toroweap wasn't exactly a walk in the park. i had a few oh shit moments.

on to fredonia

these guys are packed to the gills

breakfast and lunch at nedras in kanab

the chorizo omelette was gooood!

after setting up camp, bill showed up and it was a welcome sight

bill brought ice, water, beer, wine and gasoline

since we have a truck, the guys were able to gather firewood.........lots of them.

early evening temp

bill's misfortune (broken pannier mount) got turned around and made a dream it into a real one.......a support truck.....
