prelude to big bear sunday 2014,08.24

the weather has been very hot here in the l.a. basin in the last month or so. no wonder not too many locals are riding the desert. thankfully, we have easy access to the angeles national and san bernardino national forests and ride up to 7k feet elevation for some nice weather and beautiful landscape.

the original plan was head out friday night to big bear in the cool evening. the bike was loaded with gear and 3 days of supplies. i am going to use this ride to test my packing and bike set up. carry only the essential and survival stuff as well as tune up my fcr carb so as to prepare the bike for a future ride that will be in 9k-10k feet elevation.

friday, didn't happen, my back was still sore from the previous weekend's crash. instead, i will get one more night rest and ride early the following day.

got up at 5am, suited up, checked the bike out and pushed the bike out of the garage.

mounted the bike, put on the helmet, goggles, gloves and fixed the rear view mirror....yeah in that order...then...

the key is missing, it's not in the ignition switch....WTP, i've never taken the key out of the ignition switch. it lives there but now, it's gone. no problem, i have a spare key but when i looked for it, it's also missing...

it was embarrassing to push my bike back in the garage....

anyway, later found the key in the washing machine....

this is probably my shortest ride report and shortest distance covered.....

big bear sunday 2014,08.24

so, after the failed friday and saturday ride, i became determined to ride sunday. no one in the world can stop me....

texted matt and we made the plan. then 2 of us was joined by 3 more riders. it was strange only ktm riders want to ride along.....

got up again at 5 am,then rode 70 miles of pavement to summit inn on top of cajon. on the 15 north, isaac and ers eventually caught up with me, and all 3 of us rode to the restaurant.

parking behind the restaurant

the pics you would see are from mine and matt's camera.

inside... isaac, bigtodd, ers, me and matt

breakfast was good and now we're getting ready to roll

instead of taking the normal route via cleghorn or bowen's ranch, we decided to do ers favorite trail in lucerne valley....

matt likes it here cuz the dirt road starts behind the restaurant

riding next to the iron thunder

that train is like a mile long

dirt finally

we didn't care if it's boringly straight as long it's dirt...

that hill is steeper than it looks...

we checked out if the lake has dried up so we can play

and it felt we just all got out of prison

everyone is ready to go and i'm still practicing the figure 8......

Man you FF are going to force me to get a dual sport.......

I'm new in the state and just totally blown away by what this place has to offer a motorcyclist just miles and miles of twisties, slab it to the next set, rinse and repeat.

There are also trackdays for those not interested in performance awards and red and blue flashing light.

A trackday with some mates is miles of smiles over a few twisties.

Noted, I was waiting for winter actually. Not completely sure that I'll fit in my leathers currently

Ah yes. I too have noted how leathers shrink when stored for any length of time. Disuse I think is the culprit.

Is it adventure riding to a trackday? Or must one ride to the track carry tires and ride back?

Camping at the track is status quo I have a double thick air mattress just for the truck

and...

The food rocks by the way, once again proving that when you see a little dive bar that always has bunch of bikes in front of it "GOOD GRUB HERE"

There was also a 5'4" blond on a white Pangale leaving when I rolled up....was thinking about getting a pic but here man (on an RSV) was already staring at me

Newcomb's Ranch, located damn near smack in the center of Angles Crest Highway, this joint is one of my favorite spots on the planet. WARNING there is no such thing as a quick stop here. None. I think its requirement that you sit around outside and bullshit about bikes and bitch about the CHP for at least an hour.....and the employees are as bad as the customers.

The Corner on Mulholland Highway, I didn't eat it, there was nothing scary, spent a few yapping around with a few guys that were stopped there as well and watched a couple moderately cool cars go by. The Mulholland is the first time I actually felt the size of the Super Duke, there were a couple spots where 30mph was pushing it and had to get the big bitch side to side quickly...at dusk with crap all over corners.....good times.

From there I had rolled the rest down the PCH, which is closer to Ventura then LA, down across Malibu and Santa Cruze, split the 10 to the 405 and bailed ass for the casa.

All in all about a 500 mile day.

from the top of jacoby, we rode to holcomb valley

van dusen cabin

the plan is ride to the south side of the lake and explore more. matt on the lead

eating power bars made ers look big here

todd looks smaller on this pic

on van dusen

as we got near the pavement, it was odd, we have to wait for todd and ers....finally showed up

can't help notice. not sure if the 990's come in 2 sizes

ers had a flat on todd's bike....... todd decided to fix the flat at the restaurant, added air in the 908 front and it was good to go.

soon food on the table

someone trying to stay healthy....

everyone without the #1PP

thanks BT for paying for the damage we did.....

the boys at work

ers felt responsible and has to help....

it was a pinched tube i think. the valve was damaged too, could be from running it flat

afterwards, we explored the skyline and moonridge area looking for a remote group campground for future camping

not easy leading when three 990s are on your ass.....

found this one

we had a choice to go back to town, but matt convinced us to take the black diamond trail. on we did.

sorry, no pics. besides, it wasn't really a black diamond hard.

we made to the pavement and discussed our next move
