1973 yamaha rt 360 build

This will be an intro for me as well as a first thread. I love all types of bikes street dirt and all things in between! I have worked at a yamaha/honda dealership for 18 yrs and loved every second of it I have restored a few bikes over the years and am currently working on 3. This thread will be on the RT I bought off a buddy that didnt have the time to deal with it (not that I have the time)but I just cant turn away a good bike
This bike has been sitting for around 20yrs and when I got it home I took the carb off first thing and to my surprise it was dry as a bone and clean as could be inside!! So I cleaned the outside up and reinstalled it Then it was onto the tank It had a liner that was around 25 yrs old and looking loke it, it had started to dissolve into the petcock . I jumped the gun alittle and took the tank to be lined and started to clean out the petcock. Then I got the tank back and checked for spark and their wasnt any so I checked the coil and it looked like the wire was alittle corroded at the plug so I clipped it back a 1/4 inch and their was a good spark!! Well I installed some gas a new plug and some new oil and kicked it over a few times with the switch off just to get things moving and then looked around for someone to come watch as this relic was about to come to life!! The only person I could find was the wife so I coaxed her into coming out to watch and in one good kick the thing actually started!!!!!!!! I was so stoked!!! Then my wife said hey it looks like its smoking bad .... I tried to shift ti first and the thing took off,,,,,,the clutch was stuck No big deal the fibers were still available so I replaced them and its a good runner now!!!
So I decided to turn my attention to a few cosmetic things like the bars they were nothing but rust so I replaced them with factory new ones! Then I cleaned up the wheels and hubs as well as the forks and shocks .I cut the old narrow footpegs off and welded up some new mounts to fit some moose wides.. Then ordered a seat cover and foam from ceet I gotta say Im not to happy with it Its just to tall so Im contemplating cutting it down to the stock height....Well sorry for the long winded story, but I just wanted to get you all caught up to where Im at with this one..

I guess I should give ceet a call tomorrow and see what the deal is? Isnt a 74 a DT? Would they be different?

Yes, the '74 is a DT360A. I think there is a slight difference in the length of the pans between some years, but the shape is the same, I believe. The shape of your seat looks more like what was on the MX360 but even then it's still too tall, and they had a different cover also. Maybe CEET intended for you to be able to trim their foam?

I just rebuilt this seat a week ago because the old foam was getting hard and crumbling. The shape is very close to the original. I posted the process in this thread. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=631648

I guess I will have to get to carving? Its just that I paid 70.00 for this foam just so I could get it and through it on....Thank you very much for posting your seat thread it looks like you found a great bike in very good shape.

My new plan it to rivet some cutting board under the inside edge of the pan as a place to staple the seat cover to,then I will cut the foam and smooth it in the same way you did. I have a friend thats going to paint the tank ,light and stay,oiltank and the fenders. The decals arent available so I will just go to a sigh shop and have some made..And then paint the chassis and I think its good to go!!!

Does the new foam have holes in the bottom like the original? If so, you'll have to carve on the bottom instead of the top like I did. Hopefully you still have the original to use as a pattern.

I think I'd call CEET first and see what they have to say. Maybe they just made a mistake and sent you the wrong part. I didn't call them because it looked like they didn't have a foam specifically for the '74 available and it isn't a big job to make your own.

Called them today they said they sent me the foam for an early model and that they are working on a 72 73 model and it will be finished in a month and I could send this one back and they would send me the new one for the price of shipping..So its all good I still have to paint it and that will take a while so I have time..

made a little progress on the RT, I have sent the foam back and received the correct foam and a new seat cover. Ive installed them, but havent taken a pic yet. I have started modding a second tank and I think it is looking cool! The potmetal ring around the steel tank neck that holds the gas cap on had pretty much rotted off, so I found a weld in pop up style gas cap and made it fit with a little solversolder..


heres how the tank turned out, still have alot of small pin holes under the tank to fill and strip it of the old paint and then have a friend paint it baja brown !

thought it would be a good idea to drill all the way around the neck and then play connect the dots with the dremell.

thanks diggersrule!

I have a question, Im thinking the stator side crank seal is bad do you all know if I can change it by simply removing the flywheel and prying it out from their or is their an inner lip on it? which will make it so I have to split the cases to replace it??
