Question Original Headlight relay question?

I have an '84 R65 I'm prepping for a restoration project this fall and have a question for you folks. When I purchased this bike it came with a "Pulsar" headlight modulator. It appears to be dealer installed as I know the previous owner well and I know he wouldn't have done it this clean. Problem I'm having is there is a short somewhere in the system that I can't locate. Ive traced all the wiring. When I'm running the highbeam in the highbeam setting it flickers randomly, ie, not as it should when the modulator is turned on. There is a "Pulsar" relay type box mounted under the gas tank and there is a clicking noise coming from this when the headlight is shorting out and sounds just like it does when it's set to modulate. I've looked in many resources and can't seem to find if there was a stock headlight relay for these bikes. At this point I'd rather remove it and go back to stock. Any ideas and if you have any part numbers or diagrams that would be helpful.

You are looking for a 'Dual make SPST (Single pole single throw) relay. This will have 5 connections marked 30, 85,86, 87 and 87b. There are a number of other types that are visually almost identical. One type will have a second 87 terminal and another, a 87a terminal in place of the 87b. Although they will fit the socket and are visually identical, these will not work right.
Robs statement was in response to a question re: a /6. Maybe check the maxbmw fiche on both models to see if they're the same pn.

Are you certain there's not a light sensor in the system that might be the culprit?

As I understand it, modulators have to have a light sensor that defeats modulation when there's low ambient light (night, in a tunnel, etc).

I love every motorcycle I've owned and even some that I haven't.
