Only good thing is that he had theft insurance, it paid off the bike.
No extra for the new paint, or the exhaust he had just installed tho.

Lo-jack refunded the money he had paid them for the unit and service tho.

Lo-jack+shitty cops= worthless.

I thought the point of Lo-Jack was to track the vehicle and recover it right away......

Yep, that was what Eddie thought when he got it too. But the cops have to track it, and a small department won't have the equipment.
Evidently a large department doesn't have the give a shit.

He called the cops right after his wife confirmed it was gone, I guess bike thieves may be dangerous tho.
So they didn't bother them.

If anyone can get pictures of the bike and truck here I will cross post them.
Don't know if it will help, but I will do what I can.

Amidst the tragedy of a stolen bike, I am impressed with one thing I keep hearing. I'm not keeping count, but I've already seen several offers from forum folks extending the use of some of their very nice motorcycles for Dude's use. That is truly impressive. Good people. Dude, I'm sorry for the circumstances, and I hope a good recovery might occur.

I been reading it...yep my advise always play down your bike to unknowns. I had a kid with the first place wife and I moved in together (apartment with a garage for each unit). Kid was out to install our FREE garage door opener. Starts to ask questions about my FZ1...I turned and looked at it and said "oh this POS, it has way too many issues, trans has issues it's a POS". Kid did not ask any other questions about it...LOL And because they did the garage door opener install and for all I know he had an extra remote when we left for vacations I would put a u-lock through the garage track. Never had an issue while living there.

Same deal to some dude outside a motel, I just said this is a POS with too many issues costing me too much to repair. Dude moved on and did not ask anything else.

Maybe they were just being friendly...but I don't know them and it was clear they had no idea what my bike was (calling it a Ninja when it says Yamaha down the side means you have no real interest in the bike).

That sucks, Ben. Big time! OUCH.

You're welcome to borrow my K75 for two-up, slab touring Ben. It's fairly comfy and has a couple of big saddle bags. The fan sometimes chortles and the ABS is still non-functional, but it'll fill the required duties. Of course, you have to come back to Boulder for it and I suspect you're long gone...

This sucks! Does anyone have any practical advice on how you can avoid something like this happening?

I used to live in a sketchy part of ABQ. We had a locking hitch pin, a lock through the hole on top of the ball, and a really long plastic-covered chain (huge links) that we ran around the wheels of the bikes, and around the frame and through the wheels of the trailer. And then we covered the bikes. Some dipshit decided to try to take the trailer anyway, and drug it out about 10' into the parking lot before giving up.

Now when I travel, I usually take a bike cover and some sort of alarm disc brake lock. And everything comes off the bike and inside.

I always get rooms at the older style motels where you park out front (can always roll it into the room if need be)...I'm a light sleeper and will look out of the window during one of my many nighttime drainings...LOL However for the most part I was always with a friend on street bike trips and we would run a U-lock through our wheels, friend used a disc lock too....even in a sketchy town once we were fine. Did not realize it was that bad, our motel neighbor meet me outside in the morning and said "I can not believe you parked those bikes in this part of town, I then looked around and yep it sure was a POS area".

I've had honest Hotel owners tell me to not park in certain spots as the camera does not work there. If I am on the bike and HAVE to be at a typical hotel where you go through one main door I will park right at their front door under the overhang... whether they like it or not. I have yet been told NO.

Edited to also add: I remove everything from my cage too when I am on trips. Now sometimes I know its hard to do if your packed to the grill like you are moving. So I remove anything I don't want to go missing, this can be laptops, gps, other electronics.
