Day 22: Larimah to Darwin
Distance: 570 km Total: 10,244 km Hotter and hotter every km I rode further north. Stopped in at the Mataranka hot springs. ![]() ![]() I stopped here long enough for a photo, even then it was a little too long… ![]() I wanted to hire a canoe and spend the afternoon paddling through Katherine Gorge. Unfortunately, I arrived 15 min after an unplanned tourist bus which meant no canoe for me. Darwin, here I comes… |

Day 25: Darwin
Distance: 322 km Total: 10,566 km A very early start to try and avoid the heat. I rode out to Litchfield National Park and did all the touristy things. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Some dirt to Berry Springs. ![]() I went for a swim. ![]() Back in Darwin, I wandered down to the Mindil Beach markets and with the backpacker crew.

Day 26: Darwin to Ord River Dam
Distance: 836 km Total: 11,392 km I resisted the temptation to kick-on in Darwin and live the backpacker life. On the road again, the run for home…after all, it was only another 12,000km… ![]() There was not a lot to see until Victoria River. ![]() ![]() ![]() I was planning on stopping at Timber Creek for the night but on arrival decided to push on to the acclaimed camp ground at Ord River Dam. My first boab tree. ![]() The rider said he got sick of the Rocket falling over… ![]() |

Day 27: Ord River Dam to Halls Creek
Distance: 568 km Total: 11,960 km Up early to try and avoid the heat. Given how much water is held in the dam, I was amazed at how small the dam wall was. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Into Kunanara and then a short diversion to Wyndham. ![]() Cambridge Gulf at Wyndham. ![]() I rode past the start of the Gibb River Rd. The last of the interesting scenery before more scrub to Halls Creek for the night. ![]()

Day 28: Halls Creek to Broome
Distance: 776 km Total: 12,736 km Scenic flights over the Bungle Bungle national park were not operating today. I was glad in a way, as they cost well beyond my stingy budget. A boring day’s ride through a dull scrubby landscape. ![]() In 800km, this was the only posted scenic look-out. ![]() The prison boab tree at Derby. ![]() Monster tides at Derby. Within a few hours the water would be lapping at the platform of the jetty. ![]() Random cow.

Day 29: Broome
Distance: 47 km Total: 12,783 km Spent the morning walking around town. ![]() The went for a ride to check out Cable Beach. ![]() You can ride on the beach. ![]() If you turn right, there is a nudist beach. No backpacker girls – only aged obese men. Ouch, my eyes…. Dozed for too long in a hammock and missed the sunset. |

Day 31: Port Hedland to Onslow
Distance: 558 km Total: 13,969 km A big $$$$ job offer from my hosts plus car plus house over breakfast. If I’d been smart, I would have accepted it… We headed into their office complex and teased the younger staff that this scruffy beardy biker dude was the new boss. Saw a twister. ![]() Camped by the beach. ![]() Wandered around the dunes.

Glad that the job offers are coming in for you.
Stay firm though and carry on. You dont get many chances to do a trip like this and one things for sure, if you are getting offers now you will still be in demand later this year. Enjoying your report, all the best

Day 32: Onslow to Exmouth
Distance: 450 km Total: 14,419 km A lot more of this. ![]() For the first time in thousands of km I was a little over the speed limit when I encountered a police car. Couldn’t believe it when he lit up and pulled me over. When the conversation started “My arse was killing me, I figured you could do with a stop to stretch your legs too…hey, nice bike…” I knew I was not getting a ticket today. ![]() ![]() I arrived at Exmouth around noon and went for a walk around town. Spotted these guys wandering down the main street. ![]() I was a little embarrassed to be heating up tinned pasta (that looked more like dog vomit) for dinner when my Italian backpacker roomies wandered into the kitchen. On seeing my muck, they took pity on me and invited me to dig into the mountain of momma’s secret recipe spaghetti marinara. |

Day 33: Exmouth to Carnarvon
Distance: 425 km Total: 14,844 km I detoured to Coral Bay. So pretty. Should have stayed here instead of Exmouth. ![]() ![]() It was funny how quickly the weather changed within 20km south of the Tropic of Capricorn. ![]() I set up camp at Carnarvon and headed out to walk the 1 mile long jetty. ![]() A fascinating night chatting and drinking with a hubby/wife old school adv riders – their stories of 1970s South America, Gibb River Rd, Cape York etc on a Bultaco were a laugh! |
