Day 34: Carnarvon to Denham

Distance: 417 km Total: 15,261 km

I stopped to check-out the stromatolites (living rocks) at Hamelin Bay.

Walked along a shell beach.

They used to cut coral bricks to build houses.

Lots to see on the road to Denham.

I checked into the backpackers and continued to Monkey Mia to play with the dolphins.

Turns out the dolphins were on strike (not really, they only do feeding early in the morning) so a cute lady ranger let me in for free.

Treated myself to a night on the beer with the locals at the pub.

Day 35: Denham to Leeman

Distance: 718 km Total: 15,979 km

Finally some green!

Lunch at Kalbarri.

I had intended stopping at Geraldton but pushed on.

Dongara backpackers was closed. No joy at the pub. I pushed on.

A cabin at the Leeman caravan park was my digs for the night.

Day 36: Leeman to Perth

Distance: 489 km Total: 16,468 km

A side trip to the Pinnacles.

Then straight to a buddy’s house.

A model from California was staying there too. She was in Perth for the annual Spank Ball.

I didn’t wait to be asked twice if I wanted to tag-along to a photoshoot!

Day 38: Perth

Distance: 16 km Total: 16,484 km

No photos today.

Lazed around with my buddy and his family.

Made the mistake of kicking the football with the kids and spent the next three hours being pestered for sword fights, video games, tea party,…I was king of the kids!

Caught up with my extended family for dinner.

Day 39: Perth

Distance: 106 km Total: 16,590 km

Battled peak hour traffic to drop the bike off for a service.

My rear tyre was new when I left home a few weeks ago but it was now sad and smelly…

Caught the train into the city. Wandered around.

Lost a few hours in the hiking equipment stores.

Caught up with some of the old bike gang from when I lived in Perth for beer n pizza.

Day 40: Perth

Distance: 114 km Total: 16,704 km

Another day with no photos taken.

Lunch with a former work colleague. Caught up on the gossip since I was retrenched.

Fremantle markets and the Little Creatures Brewery on the way home.

Got a call from my prospective new employers in Melbourne. They were starting to run out of patience.

Another afternoon being king of the kids!

Day 41: Perth to Augusta

Distance: 364 km Total: 17,108 km

A late start. Sad good-byes.

I headed south along the coast.

Bunbury, Busselton, Dunsborough and the Caves Rd to Margaret River.

A walk along the beach at Hamelin Bay.

I never understood why a state rolling in mining money wanted the charge $$$$ for people to access what used to be public land.

As per usual for WA they wanted stupid money to enter the lighthouse area at Cape Leeuwin.

I stood at the gate and took photos to spite them.

Day 42: Augusta to Albany

Distance: 400 km Total: 17,508 km

I headed to Albany to catch up with Bob & Chris (who I’d met on a tour through the Himalayas in 2008).

We had planned to take in the town and a few of their locals roads but never made it any further than Bobs shed and the 23 classic bikes he has restored.

An entertaining night as Bob & Chris told of their global motorcycle adventures in the 1970s and beyond.

Day 43: Albany to Esperance

Distance: 541 km Total: 18,049 km

An early start before I snuck into the Sterling Ranges – yep, they wanted more $$$$ to simply drive to the carpark.

I rode alongside fields of canola for a few hours.

I arrived in Esperance early afternoon and spent the remainder of the day wandering around.

Bay of Fire.

Closer to town.

The locals told me a few days earlier a pair of whales were a few feet of the end of the jetty.

Day 44: Esperance to Nullabor Roadhouse

Distance: 1,107 km Total: 19,156 km

A special day for me today. To celebrate, I was in the mood for a bit of a ride.

300km before morning-tea.

I rode through some of this.

Then a lot of this.

500km before lunch.

Wake me up when it’s time to turn…

More of this.

850km before afternoon-tea at Border Village.

The last 250km for the day was spent dodging kamikaze kangaroos in the dark.

I ran out of fuel and had to top up using the emergency supply. It was eerily quiet and oh so dark. The Nullabor Roadhouse 20km away was like a space station in the distance.

A bed in a donga next to the generator set. I treated myself to what turned out to be an incredibly sad mixed grill and a few very ordinary beers.

1,107km in 12 hours and I felt like I still had another 400-500km in me for the day – I guess turning 40 hadn’t made me that old after all…

Day 45: Nullabor Roadhouse to Port Lincoln

Distance: 752 km Total: 19,908 km

The day began with more of this.

I ran into Adam from Darwin.

A brilliant few hours watching the whales folic in the Great Australian Bight.

Ceduna.

Streaky Bay.

Heading south down the Eyre Peninsula to Port Lincoln.

Port Lincoln.

It killed my daily budget but a nice pub for the night.

Day 46: Port Lincoln to Adelaide Hills.

Distance: 753 km Total: 20,661 km

I raced the clock to make the vehicle ferry to the Yorke Peninsula.

When I arrived I did not see a ferry. The ladies in the office advised me I’d missed it. But I was 10 minutes early…turns out I’d missed it by a few months! The original ferry was sold earlier in the year and the replacement had yet to arrive…

No other option than north to Port Augusta.

Whyalla.

For the first time since leaving Atherton 5 weeks and 11,000km ago, I had to change down a gear to scoot through a corner on Horricks Pass.

I snuck into the Adelaide Hills via Melrose.

A budget room at the Woodside Hotel.

Day 47: Adelaide Hills.

Distance: 200 km Total: 20,861 km

I lazed in bed waiting for the rain to pass.

I did my best to get lost in the Adelaide Hills – some dirt, Chain of Ponds x 3, Gorge Drive, Corkscrew.

Whispering Wall.

Lots of twee villages and touristy guff.
