This is about 10% the cost of the bike! In real world sit. who wants to spend that much on service? The bike doesn't have near the performance to warrant such expense. their bike has less horsepower and torque than the buell did in 2003. It is a nice bike but this expence for service for a bike competing with yamaha and honda and kawasaki is way out of line and I think it takes it out of any reasonable consumers mind yet you never read about that. They should have a cost of owership rating as well. it is sometimes discussed but never used to rate a better product
I believe he meant that the total costs (plural) of all of the various services would be $2250 "by" 15k miles. Not a single service.

I understood him to mean that, but that's still extreme, especially for a two valver. Services for my MTS 1200 have been less than $1000 total by 15k miles. A two valve Monster would be even less.

The 15k service on the MTS12 will run you about $1k all by itself. If you take the Duc to the dealer for the first service and 7.5k service, you're in for about $1300-1400 total. You must have done the first service and 7.5k service yourself, which skews the numbers a bit.

How much does the SuperT cost with good luggage, skid plate, crash bars, etc?
The NTX is a super bargin at $16k with a 8.5 gal tank, but you won't find them cheaper than MSRP.

Everyone compares these bikes to a BMW, but no GS or GSA in the test?

I guess I'll have to read it when I get the mag...

There's a line in the article: "It is comfortable, but no one called this machine out as best."
And that for some reason made me think they were saying it wasn't best in any category. I don't know why. They do say it's the best bike off-road of the group.

Speaking as a Tenere owner, I like the chart at the end where they list the "as tested" prices.
Ducati: $19,995
Stelvio: $15,990
Explorer: $18,234
Tenere: $15,610

These are MSRPs and include some aftermarket gadgets, so we all know they can be had for less. But it still shows the Tenere is a lot of bike for the money.

When I was shopping around, it seemed that $13500 was a pretty standard price for the S10. Add $1500 for the OEM items you mention and you end up around $15k, give or take some depending on initial bike price at your dealer.

MSRP to MSRP brings the prices right in line with one another. No doubt the NTX is priced right.

Nope, I've had those done at the dealer. The first service was right around $100, as I recall the second was ~ $250, and as I mentioned previously, last month the 15k was $628. I do my own oil changes in between, as I don't want to go 7500 between changes. Not everywhere charges Bay Area prices, which is part of my point. I understand that major metropolitan areas are going to be more expensive, but not everyone lives in those areas. On forums, people commonly toss out that owning a Ducati costs you at least $1000 a major service, but that's just not the case everywhere. My dealer charges $65 an hour labor last I checked, and yes they do everything Ducati prescibes, and have a great service dept.

Good to know! I figured Duc dealers across the country were pretty much aligned on shop rates, but $65/hr would certainly bring the overall cost WAY down since that's the biggest expense in the 15k service. Here shop rates are anywhere from $95/hr to $120/hr, so labor alone on the 15k can hit $1000.

I said in an earlier post that they left the GS out because the Tenere won in their previous shoot-out between it, the GS and the KTM 990. Which seems a little unfair because they also changed the focus of the test to be more street oriented.

I don't have my Ipad here at work so I can't look at the article for exact quotes. That said, all the bikes were supposed to come to the test stock, but equipped with factory panniers. The Tiger came with a bunch of extras the testers didn't ask for, so it's as tested price is higher than it should be. But the others are pretty much apples to apples as far as MSRP goes.

I don't know about the other bikes, but no ones seems to pay MSRP for the Tenere. I paid $180 for my Givi crash bars and $287, including shipping for my skid plate.

Maybe folks with the other bikes can pitch in with some prices for crash bars and skid plates for those bikes for reference? Also the MSRP price of the stock Explorer with factory bags?

Well, to confuse the issue further, the '12 Stelvio NTX (the only model we get in the USA) comes w/ crash bars, skid plate, aux lights, pannier mounts and aluminum (TRAX) panniers. You can't get it any other way. That's about $2.5k of "stuff" if purchased separately (on the Moto Guzzi web site the panniers and racks alone are $1600 ). That would put the MSRP of the "bare" bike around $13.5k, which interestingly is about what the Tenere is selling for in spite of it's $14.5k MSRP (per the Yamaha US web site).

The Multistrada won. They said it was the best street bike and okay on gravel road.
not sure how they could be blamed for thinking such.

They say that because they didn't get test bikes from those MFGs. They do the same thing in every test when they are short a bike.

While I was working today, I stopped into my local Wally World to take a quick piss. Since they have a better magazine rack than my local grocery, I happened by it.

The issue, that is being discussed, is on the stands. I had to run, but figured I could pick it up tomorrow. I didn't get a look at what month was on the front cover...
