Oil Change
Would it be a good idea to change the oil before the first 10000 km service (surley most wear takes place in the first 10000 km). What oil should I use and what is the oil change procedure ( 990 was beyond my mechanical ability)

I assume you mean 1,000km, not 10,000km...
First service (break-in) is at 1,000km. On this bike, it is very easy to change the oil... Remove bash plate (if installed; can be done with it in place, but I find oil from the filter makes a mess and spreads like cancer with the friggin thing installed) Remove oil plug (10mm Allen needed) and drain Remove oil filter Install new filter Reinstall oil plug with new crush washer Reinstall bash plate (as needed) Put bike on center stand if equipped Fill with 2.9L 15W-50 (the newest BMW recommendation; see oil threads everywhere here on ADV) As for changing the oil before the 1,000km mark, that's a personal choice...some do, some don't. I was in the latter group. Tools needed: 10mm Allen key (or socket) Oil drain pan Filter wrench (depending on the filter tightness) Whatever is needed to remove the bash plate...depends on brand...

Thanks for the great explanation on the oil change
I meant changeing the oil after the 1000km service but before the 10000 km service ( I have 5000km on now). I have been riding the bike quite hard in top (between 8 and 9 thousand). What brand of oil should I use? There is an old wives tale that says Castrol GTX is not good for a wet clutch?

I refuse to get into the "which oil" thread.
![]() Read this thread here to see why...lots of opinions on the matter. ![]() Onto your other Q, some will agree with changing it every 3,000 miles or so, and others will say you are wasting your money...

oil change interval
My thought is the on year or 6000 mile oil change interval is a little long. No harm in changing the oil and filter a little earlier than that. Yes the oil change on n F800 is much easier than on a ktm 990 :)
