650t Doesn't Show Routes

OK, so I'm a noob at this, but this isn't working. I transferred a route from Basecamp on my Mac, which showed the exact path I was going to follow (a trail) to the 650t Montana. The route showed up on the 650t with the correct name. I took off for the trail, but when I got there and brought up the route, it only showed me the crow-fly direct path (which does me no good at all unless I'm on my boat or in my plane :) ) How do I get the the thing to follow the path on the ground, not connect me waypoint to waypoint? Shouldn't be this difficult....(I know a noob) Oh, the 650t has the 24k maps installed for my location along with the 100k maps it comes with.

There is a difference between routes (on-road or direct) and tracks. How did you set it up?

Did you plan the route in BaseCamp using the same 24K Topo Maps? If you did, make sure that you have the 100K maps Disabled and the 24K maps Enabled. Also, make sure that your Routing settings are set to one of the Along-road routing Activities (Automotive, Motorcycle).

Cheers,

Well, asecamp must be set up for on-road, because it shows the path following the trail on the computer, but when it's transferred to the 650t, it doesn't follow the route, it goes direct. I have the auto set up on the 650t, so I don't understand why it goes direct. These things are frustrating.

Cheers,
Don't know how to disable maps in the 650. Settings in the 650 are set for automotive, that's why it's so frustrating. This shouldn't be so difficult.

Cheers,
I did plan the route using the SW 24k map. So, you think the 650t was using the 100k maps it has pre-loaded and somehow they don't know how to follow an auto route and default to direct?

If you have the 100K Topo's Enabled, they will take preference over the 24K Topo's if they are also Enabled. Disable the 100K Topo's, Enable the 24K Topo's and your Route will work as expected I believe assuming you have the Montana Settings in the correct mode to support Along-road routing.

Cheers,

Cheers,
How does one disable the 100k topos? The manual still loses me, mostly. I'll try harder, though, now that I know it might be possible.

Setup/map, enable or disable each map through there. But it's usually a bad idea to have more than one map enabled at a time. Basemap is the exception; keep it enabled.

Cheers,
Thanks, I found it, again. I didn't know what it was for the first time I saw it. Anyway, a new twist. The 650t does not have the 24k topo of the SW loaded. I thought I had transferred it, but guess not. Is there some reason the 650t wouldn't want/let me transfer from the Mac to the 650t? Guess that explains ? why it showed the route direct? Hmm.

I wanted to test this theory by creating a route in the 100k topo in Basecamp and then transferring it to the 650t to see if it was direct, or followed roads. Now, the route starts at the origin each time and creates a direct route to the next waypoint each time. I end of with numerous vectors each beginning at the origin. Now, I'm really confused. I hope paper maps aren't the best way to go afterall.

OK. Disconnected 650t from Mac. Created route in Basecamp using 24k topo. Works fine. But, when I connect 650t to Mac, although the 100k topo shows up under the 'Maps' pulldown on the Mac, routes come out goofy on the Mac when plotted. Must be because the 100k topo resides on the 650t, not the Mac. I must need to get the 100k too onto the Mac from the 650t and the 24k topo from the 650t onto the Mac. Any suggestions appreciated.

If the maps on your gps can't be seen in Basecamp when the gps is connected, you might need this tip in the Wisdom and FAQ thread:

I can see the 100k topo in Basecamp. But, if I create route in the 100k topo map, it generates a goofy route. I took a screen shot of what happens to show you.

You are going to have to learn how to transfer the 24k Topos to the Montana. (I only have a 60cx now, and don't know anything about transferring maps to a Montana.)

Or you can convert your route to a track in Basecamp and download that track to the Montana - my recommendation no matter what map you have.

Or you can create a finely sampled route in Basecamp and transfer that to the unit.
