Pavement?

How much of the LTH is paved or will be paved by next June 2013? Is route 389 from Baie Comeau paved? I hope not...I traded in my 2010 R1200RT for a new 2012 R1200GS ADV for this tour next June....crap..am I going to be without gravel roads?..This is my first adventure type ride and I was hoping for all gravel although I realize there is pavement in the cities....BTW..what is CW?..CCW?...

You will not be without gravel roads but they are paving it fast. CCW from Red Bay to Goose is dirt. 100+ Km out of Goose is paved and 100+ before Lab City. Paving in Quebec i cannot comment on.

If I still had every dollar I spent on motorbikes I would be a richer man but a poorer person.

Yup, Red bay to Goose is dirt, approx 600kms or more. Heading from Goose to Lab city it was approx 1/3 paved...this is the section being worked on now for complete paving over the next few years. Lab to Baie Comeau I would guess is half and half....

great movie of the TLH....my route (possible) is to go either up to Matane and cross over or go up 138 to Baie Comeau then through Labrador towards Blanc Sablon and over to the rock..haven't made up my mine entirely yet but sloshing around what the best route will be...or north sydney to the rock then over to Blanc sablon....

This is the route I took for my TLH trip. I had only been riding a bike for 3 months at that point..Lighter bike (KLR) however.
We did it in the fall. Less bugs but little wildlife. Only thing we saw were grouse and crows/ravens. Worst part of the highway IMO was from Quebec to Lab city. Lots of switch backs and loose gavel while crossing the railroad numerous times. The highway was originally made to service the railroad. We had very high winds on our trip (hurricane IGOR) which added to the complexity. Also had snow...

Just got word that Lab City to Churchill is paved axcept for 30 kms west of Churchill. Sad news indeed...

The road is boring enough as it was, now with pavement, you'll probably see more 'sleepy' drivers in the ditch.
