Buying a new bike DR650
I've never purchased any motorcycle before let alone a brand new one. I am seriously considering going with a new bike for a couple of reasons. One being is that I only have about 5k saved up for a bike and with the cost of the gear, that leaves me about 3.5k for a bike and I am just not finding anything I want at that price point, so I am looking at using that as a down payment on a 2012 Suzuki DR650 and financing the rest of it.
So on to the questions.. the MSRP of the bike is $6299, should I expect to pay full price? 200 off 1500 off etc. Should I negotiate into the price a discount on gear, etc. Any tips would be appreciated. I have bought a few new cars, but never a bike and the low price point compared to a car I wouldn't imagine there is much room to move on them. |

Could I ask why you are looking at a new DR? $3500 is definitely more than enough to find a nice gently used DR, especially if you take your time looking for one. I bought my '07 DR back earlier this year completely stock with a new set of tires and 3k miles for $2600. I don't know where you are, but it shouldn't be too difficult to find something in your criteria.
Another reason I'd recommend buying a used bike outside of the whole not going into debt for a bike is that if you plan on doing much dual sport/off road riding, the bike is bound to take a few dirt naps. Just like a car I feel a lot better about scratching/denting a bike that's used and paid for. Depending on the deal you get as well, you will also possibly have some money left over for some basic things like a skid plate/case guards/seat etc. to make riding a touch more enjoyable. Just some stuff to consider! There's quite a few DR's that pop up in the flea market/craigslist that fit your criteria if they're in your area! Let me know if you need some help searching! -Malhon |

0% financing for 5 years should be reason enough to go new

Especially getting closer to the end or the riding season, lots of deals to be found. Of course I am cheap and love to negotiate deals. |

I wouldn't go new. Let someone else take the hit for you. Be patient, and look. A lot of people ask to much for a used DR, but there are deals to be had. I got my 08' for $2850 with 2,200 miles on it nearly two years ago. Had a dent in the tank but that's now a larger plastic one anyway. I have spent on the bike what I paid for it, but now I have a sick Adventure bike!!! And, for less than what I could have bought a new one for. Just my two cents...

I'll sell you a slightly used one with only 87,000 miles
JK... I remember seeing new DR650's going for 5k in Southern California a couple years ago. Not sure what they're asking now but I would second the idea of looking for a used one with low miles. The DR's are nearly bullet proof and reliable as a claw hammer. And, they haven't really changed since 1996 with the exception of Bold New Graphics and an improved base gasket around 2003/4?? that fixed a known issue.

+ 1 on buying pre-owned. In January 2010 I bought my '08 with barely 300 miles on it, and at $2,000 off the showroom price. The tires still had the mold nipples on them.
Next, depending on where you live it can be a challenge to find a DR. But there are answers for that dilemma as well. To wit, here's something to help in the search. Save the link: http://www.bikefinds.com/suzuki-dr650-for-sale So, if you exercise some patience and have your money in hand, the pounce factor is working in your favor. Now, having said that, if you opt to go new there are some advantages. 1. You will know how the bike was treated from day one. 2. You can break it in yourself and develop your feel for what is normal for the bike (i.e., no guess work). 3. You will have the satisfaction of working up the plan for how to dress it out. Regarding that last point, the first item of business (in my opinion) is a bash plate. I went with the Southwest Moto-Tech plate, and can tell you from experience the bash plate is useful on road or off road. Good luck in the hunt!

If I were in your position, I'd be all over one like this. Your budget leaves lots extra for farkles, gear, insurance, etc. No idea where you are, so transport might take a chunk of it.
http://advrider.com/forums/showthrea...ighlight=DR650 ![]() Your original post sounded to me like "I don't have enough money to buy the bike I want, so I'm going to buy this EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE ONE."

+ 1 on buying pre-owned.
With the DR650, you are not getting any advances in technology buying new. The bike has been the same since Noah had one on the Ark. Pre-owned: Either original condition (and use the money saved to mod it) or better yet a fully modded one that has done very little work (mods add little value to a pre-owned bike). Use the money saved to buy better riding gear.

located in south eastern ontario area, between Toronto and Ottawa. Been all over Kijiji looking for deals. The other reason that I forgot to mention was being as how this is my first bike I want something reliable and I have not a clue on what to look for other then the really obvious stuff. I feel more comfortable going new. Most of the used ones i'm seeing are less then 1,000 off the price of a new one.

there is an example, it's $1300 more then msrp, so assuming I can get 500 off that's a 800 price drop for a 4 year old bike with 5,000km... Someone can do a lot of damage in 5k.... I just feel more comfortable going new with a warranty. |

Buy used!
I picked mine up for $1700 from a guy with 25000 miles on it. I've had it for around 2 years now and it runs like a champ. I recommend used because you won't spend nearly as much on the bike but you'll be able to spend ~3-$4000 on gear and such(trust me, it's possible to spend that much on gear alone
). 5k doesn't leave you a lot of wiggle room.

also
as another person here said, nothing has changed on the bike, it's been the same since '97. And they run FOREVER. If you can't get there on a DR650, you probably shouldn't be trying.

There are literally THOUSANDS of used bikes around 3k. That leaves 1k to mod the bike as you like, 500 for gear, 300 for the MSF course, and 200 for gas, incidentals, etc.
DO NOT BUY A NEW BIKE.
